South Wales Papillon Club Championship Show 2014

05 October 2014
Judge: Mr Glenn Robb
Junior Handling Judge: Mr Johnathan Wells

Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to the South Wales Papillon Club championship show for inviting me to judge at their show it was an absolute pleasure & the hospitality was second to none.

I would also like to thank the exhibitors for their entry & support. For a club show I truly think this is so important as the club shows are a huge part of breeds history & need the entry support.

Overall I was very disappointed as to where our gorgeous dainty breed is heading. It is our job as breed ambassadors to retain the heritage of this breed & to maintain what so many well respected kennels in the past set out to achieve. I would say 50 per cent of the entry had mouth issues when the Standard clearly states that the Papillon should have a ‘scissor bite’. The number of teeth missing in young exhibits as well was quite disappointing. Depth of ribcage & spring of rib was also a concern in fact in some cases depth & spring was practically non existent.

The pretty dainty butterflies of this breed seems to be lost in a coarser open head that consists of more of a ski-slope skull to muzzle angulation rather than a refined muzzle into a defined stop with good rise of forehead completed with endearing dark animated eyes to finish the headpiece. Not yet have ever seen an ugly butterfly that is clumpy & coarse nor a moth.

I do on the other hand have to say that presentation on most exhibits was hugely improved since my previous appointments & all exhibits did exude lovely temperaments throughout, which is extremely promising.

I was very pleased with my principal winners in both dogs & bitches & I was pleased to award a first time CC (for both dog & owner) in males to a more than deserving exhibit.

4. Orchard’s PANSPAYON ARTEM
5. William’s JOHNASTA MARCUS

Puppy Dog (1 entry 1 abs )

Junior Dog (5 entries 1 abs )
1. Morrell & Teague’s BONMESHAY TED BAKER FOR TEMELORA, 16 months old. Pretty b/w. Lovely balanced head with dark eye expression. Well set ears with lovely fringing cupping the head. A balanced outline with good spring of rib & length of loin. Well angulated rear & moved & showed well. Just needs more body to pull everything together
2. Mann’s BUTTALOWIE SOLO MELANGEL, 14 months b/w Phalene. Just needs to calm down to look balanced on the stand but he comes together on the move. A pretty Phalene which is so nice to see. Ears will calm with age & a less noisy venue. Would prefer the correct mouth. Nice tailset, level topline & coming into good coat
3. Lock’s TEMELORA MARDI GRA
4. Osborne’s HARIBO ICE OVER TYKKYDEWAS

Yearling Dog (7 entries 2 abs)
1. Cooper’s TOOT SWEET’S CHARMING CASANOVA (IMP DEU), r/s/w 19 months. Smart balanced dog, would prefer a tighter head & depth of stop with softer expression. Well set ears & in good body coat. Well laid straight front, level topline & length of loin. Well angulated rear & moved with drive yet slightly close moving behind
2. Caton’s PAINTED KING FORUSSI AT HENRIX (IMP POL), b/w 18 months. Lovely little dog with a pretty expression & the head cupped by well fringed ears. Slightly unsettled but just needs that confidence to look balanced on the move. Level topline, good spring of rib & length of loin. Well angulated rearquarters & a lovely well set tail. Moved well, just needs to settle down
3. Morrel & Teague’s TEMELORA DREAM LOVER
4. Temelora Mardi Gra
5. Walklett’s FARTHINGHALL’S NEW TOUCH AT ANGULLYON

Graduate Dog (2 entries 1 abs)
1. Temelora Mardi Gra, b/w, entered in two other classes & the more he came into the ring the more he settled. He seemed to have fun on his day out today.

Well angulated rear & nice straight backend. Moved well & pulled out of himself with drive

4. Cochrane’s TUTYAK GET UP AND GO

Limit Dog (12 entries 2 abs)
1. Munn’s SMILE LINE SILENZIO SUNSHINE GARSIV (IMP JPN), r/s/w 3 years. The most balanced little dog which will win him the class every time. From the outlook he has the most stunning outline, balanced throughout & incredible turn of stifle & short hock. Pretty head with well shaped ears set correctly. Good stop & rise of forehead. Lovely straight front & well laid shoulders. Good spring of rib. Level topline through to well set tail & correct plume. Moved well as he is so well made. RCC & RBIS
2. Allsorp & Browne’s CONYSLUCK JUSCALMEANSOME AT JALATEMME’S, b/w 2½ years. The prettiest of dogs. So well balanced on the side gait with his move & drive yet looks so unbalanced on the stand. Lovely shaped head & friendliest of temperaments which is a pleasure to experience. Showed his head off but from the side he needs to stand out of himself more rather than under himself as he loses rear angulation & front quarters look unbalanced
3. Taylor’s BANKSHILL LORD OF THE RINGS IS PUREPIXIE
4. Mann’s MELANGEL TIME TO SHINE
5. Morrell & Teague’s TEMELORA RISING STAR JW

Open Dog (6 entries )
1. Caton’s COFFE ICE CREAM FORUSSI AT HENRIX (IMP POL), 2 years b/m r/s/w. Very balanced young dog who I can see has built up a lot of confidence with his handler which I have a lot of time for. Elegant outlines. Pretty head & well set ears curtained by glorious fringing, good spring & depth of rib into level topline, well laid shoulders & well angulated rear giving a stunning outline. True coming & going on the move giving the finishing touches to a balanced outline on the stand. Moved so smart. Pleased to award him his first CC. CC & BIS
2. Whitehill’s CH AMICAE SOMETHING TO SAY, lemon/w 2½ years old. I have admired this dog from a distance in the past. On the move & on the table he was so balanced yet on the stand he just lacked the same presence & spark today. Prettiest of heads. Pretty dark expressive eyes. Level topline & well angulated rearend.
