02 June 2023 Papillon Breed Notes
The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held their centenary show at the Kennel Club Buildings Stoneleigh. What a spectacular event this was, Chris Headley the clubs secretary and the hard working committee had looked at every aspect to make this a memorable show to fit the occasion. Congratulations to them all.
Chris Christensen kindly donated gifts of shampoo to various classes and principal winners they also donated to the raffle. Fish 4 Dogs generously donated gift bags to everyone. The raffle table was brimming to every corner with fantastic prizes. What an array of super prizes on offer.
The clubs rosettes were beautiful, also given were trophies, medals and every exhibitor had a show bag with a memory of the show and a new club badge. The committee really had thought of everything possible.
There was a memorabilia table kindly supplied by Liz and Alan Bartram (Burghbridge). It was so lovely looking back at the years gone by and remembering faces now and in the past years. How nice it was to see the pictures of the dogs that I remember so well and truly respected their qualities.
Pictures of the Papillon Junior Handling Awards that I set up many moons ago and seeing the youngsters then and those still showing to this day. Where has the time gone?
Pictures showing the then youngsters such as Kirsten Stewart Knight, Rebecca Thompson, Kirsty Miller (Ryan) and Glenn Robb just to name a few.
It was so nice to see Rebecca at the show for Papillon Live standing in for her Mum and Dad whist they were on holiday. Then later in the year Kirsten will be judging The Papillon Butterfly Dog Club of Scotland. It makes me very proud that many the juniors carried on having an interest in our beautiful breed.
Chris Anderson had the club stall present and it was brimming with exciting things to purchase.
Philip Shirley (Cordonrouge) was our judge for the show, travelling over from his now resident home in Spain. As would be expected of a breed specialist his ring etiquette was perfection, being so gentle with the dogs and always allowing every exhibitor the chance to make sure their charges performed at their best. Having a good sized ring helped immensely as many of the classes had large numbers present.
The stewards kept everything moving along nicely making sure everyone was in the right place at the right time.
During the lunch break we saw the presentation of the Papillon Clubs Annual Awards. Glenn and I were so proud of Selena, Jenson and Travis taking some of the top honours, congratulations also to Sue Morrell collecting her framed certificate for the Phalenes. Thank you to the Club.
The puppy walk as always was so entertaining. It always gives me a thrill to see the babies take their first steps in the ring and try and imagine what the future holds for these promising youngsters. Judging by what I saw the future is bright.
Karen Maskell who now runs the Junior Handling Awards put some of the Juniors of days gone by back in the ring as a walk down memory lane. Also getting the then juniors to show moves of the past and present. Over the years things have changed. No more reverse T moves, figure of eight moves, reverse triangles just the basic showing moves that we all know so well. Each ‘junior’ of the day was presented with a bottle as a celebration of their handling skills. Karen gave a little history of the Junior awards and how they started with me presenting a portfolio to the breed clubs so many years ago. Then there was no junior club handling and look how far we have come now. Well done Karen on your achievements to date and thank you for your gift.
Everyone had a truly fabulous day and one that will be etched in our memory boxes for some time.
The principal winners for the show were as follows:
Best In Show/ BCC went to a very thrilled Irene and Glenn Robb with their six month old youngster Gleniren Oops I Did It Again Sunshoo who also took Best Puppy In Show. Reserve Best In Show/ RBCC went to her elder sister Ch Gleniren Daddy’s Starmaker.
We received such beautiful rosettes from the judge each with a fan attached, a butterfly cushion and a framed picture from the 80th Anniversary Championship Show 2003 presented then to the Best Puppy In Show. On that occasion won by Philip Shirley’s Cordonrouge Ciara JW and re-presented by the judge for the 100th anniversary show. I am lead to believe the framed picture was donated to the club for the 2003 show from Japan. It was a thrilling day, one we will always remember.
