11 July 2025 Papillon Breed Notes

So we go to probably one of my favourite breed show in the calendar, The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club of Scotland Championship Shows. The show is held at Lawrie & Symington at Lanark. It is a super venue with parking outside to the front of the main building. Always spotlessly clean in every direction. There is a cafe on hand to feed the hungriest exhibitor. The club shares the venue with the Scottish Pomeranian Club which works so well and there is just a lovely atmosphere reminiscent very much of how breed club shows always were a few years ago.

Joining a breed show with a Championship Show is the norm these days due to current circumstances but these shows just become a continuation of another show after a long day showing at the General Championship Show and sometimes seemingly an afterthought. The breed club committees work very hard to make the best they can but people are tired after getting up so early and travelling long distances. Because the breed shows start much later in the day, very often they go on to stupid o’clock with most exhibitors having a long journey home. It makes for an exceedingly long day and maybe not as enjoyable as it should be. It certainly cannot compete with the atmosphere of a breed show held in its own right.

For this show I had the honour of judging the show, it is always very special to be given an appointment by a breed club especially when it is your own breed. So heartfelt thanks to the committee for allowing me to do so.

Liz Anderson had a stand with her beautifully made covers for people to purchase. There was a £50 draw and a very delighted winner. The raffle table was bulging with super prizes. So many I think everyone must have taken something home.

The ring was set out beautifully and on this occasion Ted Whitehill stewarded for me and kept me in the right direction. Thank you Ted, it was lovely to spend the day with you.

After a busy weekend at SKC with two shows the day before the dogs and handlers coped really well. Dog showing can be tiring when intense and we must always make sure of remembering this fact for the four paws, it must always be fun to them.

Laura Mandelson (Honrukai) judged the Special Classes and the Junior handling, I hope she enjoyed her day.
