BVIB SERENGLADE SATANYA FOR SERENGLADE
Thanks to my two capable stewards, whose very able assistance, helped to make my judging run so much more smoothly.
I was looking for a dainty, well balanced, nice tempered Papillon, which moved with elegance and above all, soundness. My major winners were exactly that. Unfortunately, there were some that were, quite lovely dogs, with the correct breed type, but sadly, were not up to the par, when it came to movement, so had to pay the ultimate price. On the whole temperaments were very good. What I found alarming was the fact that a few dogs were trimmed and I do not mean a simple tidying on the sides of the feet. Papillons are a breed that is best left untrimmed in its natural state. Obviously we can’t stop exhibitors from entering trimmed dogs, but we can make a point that this is not acceptable in this breed, before it is too late and the natural look will be gone forever. Another point is the breed standard calls for hare feet. By all means trim off the sides, otherwise they do look a lot like ducks, waddling along, but please don’t chop off the feathering on their toes, which was such a feature in my hey-day and one that we were very proud to show off.
For some reason, Crufts does not acknowledge or in my opinion appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to keep older dogs in tip-top condition . After the judging had finished and with the permission of both exhibitors, I judged a BVIB. With an overall entry of thirty one Veterans, I felt they deserved that honour. Had I thought of it, I would have supplied a rosette.
Finally, although I have mentioned nicely marked dogs in my critique. This is as a description only. It’s equally as good to have a solid headed dog, but if they are nicely marked then, that is the icing on the cake, so to speak. For me, markings and colours are purely cosmetic.
VETERAN DOG 18 Entries 3 abs
Lovely entry of veterans, of which, you all should be very proud.
1st Rutten’s CH ANTONY. I have, previously had the pleasure in judging this sprightly, thirteen and a half year old, dark red sable & white lad. In fact I awarded him a well-deserved CC & BOB at the time. Moved and showed with elegance. Presented in good coat and condition. Remarkably, he hasn’t lost that ring presence that insists that you choose him, above all others.
2nd Joyce’s CH CALAJOY ROBBIE MACFLUFF. Although this 8 yr B/W, was different in type to first, being shorter on the leg and more body, he still adhered to the breed standard and was a very worthy winner. With good head and dark eye. In good coat, tail nicely fringed and placed well over the back. Moved and showed well.
3rd Gross’s SWED/DAN/FIN/NORJAP/INT CH CANDYGOLDS TRADEMARK. This rather dainty well marked 8yr B/W wasn’t in such fine coat as 1st & 2nd, but in all other things looked very elegant & stylish on the move. Good angulation and tail carriage. Moved and showed well.
4th Bartlett’s BRONTIGAER SUCCESS STORY AT ROZABARON
5th Bartram’s BURGHBRIDGE UR CLASSIC GOLD
SPECIAL PUPPY DOG 10 Entries
1st Magri & Arrowsmith’s ROZAMIE DREAM LOVER. This fine boned, 10mth R/S/W caught my eye, when he walked into the ring and I was not disappointed when he was placed on the table. Lovely head & sweet expression, dark eye, well defined blaze and large, correctly shaped ears. Good reach of neck, on well, placed shoulders and level top-line. Straight front and well defined turn of stifle. Good tail carriage. Not overly coated, but correct for his age. Moved around the ring with style & elegance. There is nothing exaggerated about this young dog and yet, it is difficult not be impressed with him. He has a certain and very bright future ahead of him, which I will watch with interest. BPIB
2nd Banfield’s KINGSHAVEN DANGER MOUSE. This elegant, dark R/S/W 12mth did not have a symmetrical blaze, but this did not detract at all from his lovely head & expression. Darkest of eyes. Good ear carriage and reach of neck. Nicely coated with well feathered tail carried correctly over the back. In a lot of respects, a similar in type to first. Lovely exhibit.
3rd Hill’s CARAIDEAS THE ENCHANTER. Dark R/S/W 10mth with symmetrical blaze. Well bodied, with correct coat for age. Moved correctly and showed well.
4th Burns’ PETITCHIEN’S LOVE BYTE
5th Patrick’s VOLPECULA SET IN GOLD
SPECIAL JUNIOR DOG 16 Entries 1 abs
1st Barnett’s FEORLIG MAGIC IN THE MAKING. On looking at this lightly marked, 17mth dark R/S/W, I would not have said he would have been my obvious 1st choice, but he could not be overlooked with his superb movement and showmanship. Nicely marked head, with black mask. Large, well placed, well fringed ears. Well balanced, with all the right bits in the right places.
2nd Wells & Brown’s BANKSHILL LORD OF THE DANCE AT METAMORPHIC. Elegant, nicely marked 17mth Tri, with sweetest expression, yet not losing his masculinity. Good ear carriage and reach of neck. Good front & rear action. Superb tail carriage. Over all, presents a pleasing picture on the move and standing.
3rd Roosens’s KANDYNO DE COSTALINA [ATC AP00539FRA]. I saw this 18mth lightly marked R/W as a youngster and was very impressed. He is very much my type and catches the eye when going around the ring, but unfortunately 1st & 2nd had the edge on movement today. Obviously it wasn’t horrendous, otherwise he would not have this placing, but just enough to give the first two the edge. Another day, the placing could be very different.
4th Dunhill-Hall & Davidson-Poston’s SPINILLONS SPARK IN THE DARK
5th Robert’s ETERNAL SPIRIT FOREVER RAYOL
YEARLING DOG 17 Entries 1 abs
1st Clint’s PAPPLEWICK PREACHER MAN JW SHCM. This fairly heavily marked, 21mth B/W lad has been a favourite of mine, when watching from ringside, since I first saw him and I was not disappointed, when I finally got my hands on him. Beautiful head & expression, with pencil blaze. Huge ears and curtain fringing. He is not overly big and my impression of him, is that there is more to come in the future. In my eyes, he is perfect. He was out gunned today on maturity, but I have no doubt he will make a Champion and if he doesn’t, there is no justice in this world. One I would be honoured to have in my kennel. I wish you the best of luck with him.
2nd Letch & Allsop’s CONYSLUCK THE RED BARON. This 16mth Red & White, is very pleasing to the eye and for me stands out in the crowd. He was unfortunate to be in this class, against the 1st as I liked him very much. Superb head & markings. Well bodied, with good angulation. Correct in all things and a joy to judge.
3rd Wells & Brown’s BANKSHILL LORD OF THE DANCE AT METAMORPHIC
4th Pavlova’s LENSKYI TIME IS MONEY JUN CH [ATC Q00004RUS]
5th Orchard’s KISSABLE DE COSTALINA AT PANSPAYON (IMP BEL)
POST GRADUATE DOG 19 Entries 2abs
1st Scovell’s FRASERMAR EXPLOSION AT CASWELL. This well-marked & nicely presented, 2yr Tri is not overly flowing in coat, but his superb movement, easily secured him this class. Good head, expression & ear carriage, dark eye and pigmentation. Well laid shoulder placement with good front, turn of stifle and tail carried correctly over level top-line. Stood & showed well.
2nd Scott’s PAPPLEWICK PTARNIGAN. This nicely sized, well coated 3yr R/S/W has good head and large well placed and fringed ears. Good reach of neck, flowing into level top-line, which he kept on the move & standing.
3rd Iggulden’s WINTERPICK WONDERFULWORLD. This dark R/S/W boy of nearly 4yrs was quite similar in type to 2nd Good head with dark pigmentation and slightest hint of a pencil blaze and nicely shaped ears. Good coat and well feathered tail.
4th Urwin’s PAPAROTTSIE PAINTED LORD JW
5th Green’s BOUNTYFUL DELIGHT FOR RUBYWINGS
MID LIMIT DOG 19 Entries 1abs
1st Miller’s FEORLIG KLEVER KLOGGS JW. Showy, lightly marked 2 year dark R/S/W. Good head, with dark eye. Large well placed and fringed ears. Nicely coated of correct texture. Comes into his own when moving and presents a lovely picture, whilst striding around the ring. Stood & showed well.
2nd Melvin & Cox’s TRICIANBRI WISH BEAUNE AT SHALANDAR SHCM. This, elegant, flashy, well-marked, 3 yr B/W is not unknown to me as I have judge him preciously as a puppy. He has matured into very nice specimen of the breed and his owners should be proud. If I were to nit-pick, I would prefer a slightly less tight tail set.
3rd Brook’s CRELIATOWN WHITE PIXIE. Nicely sized, well coated 4 yr B/W. He has a lovely head & expression. Moved and showed well to secure him this place in the line-up.
4th Morrell & Teague’s TEMELORA A TOUCH OF FROST
5th Casey’s SHAMAL THROW THE DICE
LIMIT DOG 16 Entries
1st Nolan’s ABBEYTON HERE WE GO AGAIN FOR LOERBURN. This eye catching, well made & nicely marked R/W 5yr lad, is possibly up to size, but I couldn’t deny him this placing as he ticked all the boxes bar the one for me. He has a lovely head & expression. Well presented and in lovely coat & condition. Moved around the ring, as though he owned it. Stood & showed well.
2nd Hanson’s BOSSPAPS KRUMM GROMBLE VOM BASILBROOKE SHCM. Nicely sized fairly heavily marked, 4 yr Dark R/S/W. In excellent coat & condition. Good hare feet. Straight front & good rear angulation.
3rd Munn’s HARRY PARRY AT RINGLANDS. Lightly marked 3yr R/W. Good head and expression. Well placed and correctly shaped ears. Good reach of neck & level top-line.
4th Robb’s GLENIREN NIKOLIA MANIA SUNSHOO
5th Foote’s SOUTHANNING MAJOR MAX
OPEN DOG 21 Entries 2abs
What a fabulous class of quality exhibits, which consisted, mostly of Champions from around the world. This was almost an impossible task, which, in the end came down to personal choice and nit-picking. Obviously another day, another judge and things could have a totally different outcome. This was certainly not a class, to feel ashamed not to be placed. There was a time that judges at Crufts were able to give more awards, when they felt they were needed. Unfortunately they do not do that anymore. If ever there was need, today would have been one of them!
1st Vandermolen & Newcomb’s CH/AM/G CH LAFFORD FLY ME TOO FARLEYSBANE JW. This strikingly, 5yr Tri dog is no stranger to me, having awarded him a res CC when he was younger. He has matured into a cracking specimen. Lovely head & expression, with dark eye & pigmentaion. Good mouth. Ears, well placed and nicely fringed. Superb length of neck & level top-line, which gives him such elegance when moving around the ring. Holds his tail correctly, whilst standing and on the move. As with my BPIB winner, nothing is overly exaggerated about this dog and yet he effortlessly, just oozes style & elegance. DCC & BOB
2nd Stewart & Stewar-Knight’s CH/FIN CH SILJANS RAGGE JR CONNECTION AT TUSSALUD. Very close decision between 1st and this well balanced & nicely marked, 4yr tri, pushed hard, all the way to the very end. Beautiful head & expression with dark pigmentation. Huge, well placed ears, with curtain fringing. Top-line & tail carriage spot on. Straight front & good turn of stifle. Exhibited in lovely coat & condition. He moved and showed extremely well. RDCC
3rd Hansen’s DAN CH INT CH TOYMAKER’S YOU NEVER CAN TELL [ATC AP01672DNK]. Elegant nicely marked 5 year old, really dark R/S/W. With lovely head & expression. Well positioned and nicely shaped ears. Well coated. Showed & moved with style & elegance.
4th Roosen’s BEL/FR/LUX/CRO/SWE/FIN/CHIB CH SILJANS TRULY YOURS [ATC AM01286SWE]
5th Pavlova’s INT/RUS/ES/CZ/FIN/EST/LT/CRO CH LENSKUI ARAGON [ATC AP00252RUS]
GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME 13 Entries 1abs
1st Barnett’s FEORLIG MAGIC IN THE MAKING
2nd Davidson-Poston’s CH SPINILLONS REBEL ROWSER JW SHCM. Nicely sized 2 year B/W. With good head, dark eye & symmetrical balze. Well fringed, correctly placed ears. Moved & showed well.
3rd Brooks’s CRELIATOWN WHITE PIXIE. Another nicely marked 4 yr B/W. With good coat, nicely textured. Moved & showed well, to secure his place in this large class.
4th Green’s BOUNTYFUL DELIGHT FOR RUBYWINGS
5th Prince’s TEMELORA SOUL MATE
VETERAN BITCH 14 Entries 2 abs
This class was both difficult and a joy to judge and in this case I truly do wish that I could have awarded two firsts. There was only a hare’s breath in my decision as to who should actually win it.
1st Morrell & Teague’s CH SERENGLADE SATANYA FOR TEMELORA. This very regal, well-marked 10 ¾ yr R/S/W Phalene has always ranked high up there in my all, time favourites list and she just happens to be a Phalene. Beautiful head & expression, Dark expressive eyes. Large, well fringed, correctly placed ears. Level top-line. Superb coat & condition for age. Hare feet. Good tail carriage. Showed & moved well.
2nd Robb’s CH GLENIREN SCARLET SIGNATURE. The last time I judged this exquisite. 9 1/2 year old R/S/W was when she was a minor puppy and I awarded her the CC & BOB Suffice to say that she hasn’t lost any of the fine qualities which I saw in her so long ago. She has the look of a dog, half her age. It was a pleasure and indeed an honour to see & judge her again.
3rd Gray’s GYPSY ROSALEE. In my eyes, I am afraid that, unfortunately, this lovely 11 yr B/W, although a very nice specimen, didn’t really stand much chance of beating either of the first two girls. Nethertheless she deserved her placing in this very large class.
4th Urwin’s BEGAVILLE GEORDIE GIRL FOR PAPAROTTSIE
5th Welsh’s BEDELLUS HEAVEN SENT TO KAZIM
SPECIAL PUPPY BITCH 11 Entries 1 abs
1st Thorton’s SHEVID RUMOR HAS IT. My first thought, when I saw this beautifully marked 14 mth tri, was WOW. She has all the attributes that anyone would like to own in their kennel. Nicely sized, with lovely head & expression. Dark eye with, large, well placed ears. She has a way of standing that catches the eye. To nit-pick, would have preferred a slightly looser tail-set, ironically, because of this, it shows her superb top-line, which she maintains, well on the move. Nether the less, a quality exhibit, which I shall watch her future with interest. BPB
2nd Varley’s DENEMORE ICONSMELODY AT COXLEYVIEW. Lightly marked 11 month R/W. With good head and expression. She hasn’t the maturity of 1st but her coat is coming on nicely for her age. She showed & moved nicely.
3rd George-Evans’s KINGSHAVEN DIZZY WHIZZY TO JORGEALIN. Another lightly marked 11 month R/S/W. Very similar in type to 2nd so my thoughts are very similar to what I have written above.
4th Smith’s ADINAKEN PRETTY PUZZLED
5th Langdon’s KINGSHAVEN DIVA IN DISGUISE
SPECIAL JUNIOR BITCH 11 Entries 1 abs
1st Price’s CONNECTION SILJANS WHITE STAR (IMP FIN). Cracking well, marked 16 month R/S/W, with beautiful head & expression, dark eye & pigmentation. Large well shaped ears. Well bodied, with good top-line & tail carriage. Moves soundly and elegantly around the ring and catches the eye when standing. Another exhibit destined for higher awards.RBCC
2nd Langdon’s TUTYAK GEM OF SHADOWKNIGHT. Strikingly marked, 13 month B/W, with dark eye and pleasing expression. Large, correctly shaped & fringed ears. Correct coat for age. Lovely top-line & tail carriage. Showed & moved well.
3rd Cox’s DENEMORE GABISCANDY FLOSS AT TRICIANBRI (IKC). This 15 month Dark R/S/W comes into her own when moving and is a joy to watch. She has all the essentials to make it to the top. She just needs time to mature.
4th Welsh’s KAZIM UPTOWN GIRL
5th Comrie-Bryant’s FRASERMAR SNOW BOTHER
YEARLING BITCH 21 Entries 1abs
1st Carroll & Newman’s IR CH DENEMORE RAGGE SENSATION. This, nicely marked 19 month Tri, caught my eye as she entered the ring. Gorgeous head & expression, with well-shaped dark eyes & pigmentation. Large, well shaped ears, with curtain fringing. Firm body and level top-line, covered by an abundance of coat, which was long, fine & silky in texture. Well-furnished tail, which she carried beautifully, whilst striding, purposefully around the ring. Although, unaware at the time, I see that she is sired by my RCC dog winner and when I think about it, they are very similar in type. When in the challenge for BOB, I was tempted, but she seemed a little overawed at times and I thought that it wouldn’t do her any favours to be thrust into the big ring. I shall watch her show career with interest. BCC
2nd Pavlova’s LENSKAJA TOP MODEL JUN CH [ATCAQ00002RUS]. This well balanced 23mth R/W had lovely head & expression. Large, well placed ears. Superb neck & top-line. Straight front & good turn of stifle. She did not have an abundance of coat, but her obvious quality and the way she comes into her own when moving was a delight to watch.
3rd Roberts & Smith’s PAPSHUND LADY SASHA FOR RAYOL. This nicely marked 20mth B/W Phalene has the right things in the right places. Moved well around the ring and stood four square. Just needs a little more furnishing to complete the picture.
4th Green’s MERCESDES DIAMOND AT RUBYWINGS
5th Mann’s ELLESANGELS MYSTIC MEG MELANGEL
POST GRADUATE BITCH 18 Entries 2 abs
1st Munn’s RINGLANDS SPECIAL GIFT. Elegant, 18 month, dark R/S/W. Delightful head & expression. With large well furnished & shaped ears. Good reach of neck & level top-line. Straight front & well defined turn of stifle. She moved well, with style & purpose around the ring.
2nd Morrell &Teague’s TEMELORA ALICIA JW. Nicely sized, and well balanced, 2 yrs R/S/W with nice head & well shaped ears. Good top-line and well defined turn of stifle. Showed & moved well.
3rd Deamer’s BANKSHILL WEE CRACKER. Very close decision between this very nice, 2yr B/W and 2nd place and my decision could easily be reversed on another day.
4th Hill &Lyndon’s WENANLEE MOONLIGHT ANGEL
5th Dembiniok’s HOLLREXIA MAGICAL STAR
MID LIMIT BITCH 19 Entries 1abs
1st Oborne’s TYKKYDEWAS TWIRLING TULIP. I would describe this nearly 4 year old, R/S/W as dainty, but well built. She has a delightful head & expression and sturdy body under all that coat and has everything you would wish for and looks the part, when standing & moving and well deserved her place in this very large class, but unfortunately, for me she seems to have lost some of her lovely ear fringing. Hope that it grows back soon to complete the picture.
2nd Maggregor’s CRAIGABER TIMEWATCH JW. Lightly marked, though somewhat vocal 3 yr Tri. Lovely head and expression. Good reach of neck and superb top-line. Well bodied, with fine silky coat and tail feathering. Moved & showed well.
3rd Barlett’s BRONTIGAER BELLISSIMA. This 3 yr eye catching Tri, is not unknown to me, as I gave her a 1st at her very first show as a minor puppy. She has grown into an outstanding specimen, and comes into her own on the move. Possibly one of the best tail sets her today, when on the move. With a little more coat and perhaps a bit more confidence, could go all the way.
4th Comrie-Bryant &Gadsby FRASERMAR VANITY FAIR
5th Wilson & Lawrence’s ERINSJOY ITS MY LIFE
LIMIT BITCH 10 Entries 1 abs
1st Buss’s TWIGGY CUPCAKE OF FLUTURA JW. Well balanced, nicely marked 3 yr, dark Silver Sable & White, with a lovely head & expression, dark eye & large, well shaped ears. Correct length of neck & level top-line. Stood four-square and moved and showed well. For me, she just needs a little more length of coat to add the finishing touch.
2nd Cox’s TRICIANBRI WISH’N KISS JW. This quality, nicely marked 3 yr B/W is a favourite of mine. She has everything it takes and then some. Unfortunately it was not her day to blossom. She must be a nightmare to show. She did enough to secure this placing. Had she put just that little more sparkle, would have won the class. It is hoped she will shine enough, to win that elusive third ticket.
3rd Reed’s GRINSDALE ROSE BUD. There is so much to like about this nicely marked dark R/S/W 3yr. Good head & expression. Well set ears with curtain fringing. In good caot. Showed & stood well.
4th Morton’s ABLAZZOR WILD AT HEART
5th Victor & Mclaughlin’s POWDERMILL LOOK TIMELESSLY
OPEN BITCH 11 Entries 1 ABS
Difficult class for as, both of the first two I have watched at ringside with envy and would be proud to own either or both. If it comes to that, I wouldn’t say no to any of the girls placed in this class!
1st Cullen’s ANCOJO WHISPER TO ME. Well balanced, lightly marked 2 yr B/W Good head with symmetrical blaze and dark expressive eyes. Large well positioned ears with curtain fringing. Good body, enhanced with long, silky coat and lovely hare feet. Moved around the ring with purpose & style.
2nd Kirk’s CH ABLAZZOR WILD CHILD AT KIRKCHASE JW. I would describe this 2 yr Tri as well built and extremely elegant. Lovely head & expression. Good reach of neck & level top-line. Straight front and well defined turn of stifle. Perfect hare feet. Moved around the ring with style.
3rd Anderson’s AM/UK CH CLEARLAKE CLOVIS AT NORTHLYTE. Well balanced, lightly marked 3yr Tri. Beautiful head & expression. Well defined blaze. Looked good, whilst standing and on the move.
4th Weber & Sakai’s LUX/INT CH ETERNAL EMBLEM JP I LOVE SHUREI [ATC AP00207JPN]
GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME 7 Entries
1stDavidson-Poston’s CH/IR CH SPINILLONS SAFFIRE JW SHCM. This quality, nicely sized, nearly six year old Tri has the most exquisite head & expression and darkest eyes with large, well fringed ears. Everything to like about her and an easy winner in this class. Lovely coat, soft in texture and a very worthy Champion, but unfortunately, for me, her outline was completely spoiled by what appeared to me to be overly trimming.
2nd Gray’s GENNASUS MAKE BELIEVE. This lightly marked 8 yr B/W certainly did not look her age. Good head with well-shaped & fringed ears. Nicely bodied and good coat. Long, well feathered tail.
3rd Coughlan’s TEMELORA GATHERING DREAMS FOR PAUPAD. This 3yr R/W was possibly up to size, compared with some in this class. She was well presented in good coat and fine condition & had lovely hare feet, which the standard asks for.
4th Wright’s TINKLEBURY HURTLE MYRTLE
5th Waller’s LILNROSE DEVIL WOMAN
