The Joint Papillon Clubs Championship Show was hosted by the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club at Hill House Independent School, Doncaster. My thanks to all the exhibitors who brought their bitches under me, to the club for inviting me to judge and my grateful thanks to my extremely hard working stewards for the smooth running of the ring.

We need to consider seriously the future breeding of really good quality bitches. Their purpose is to produce the future generation. I found far too many of the younger bitches lacking in body with incorrect fronts, extremely poor rear movement, shoulders far to steep and poor spring of rib and narrow chests. These major faults need to be addressed without delay. Learn to assess your stock and be brutally honest otherwise this lovely breed will only deteriorate. Only ever breed from the best stock, second best isn’t good enough. Talk to well established breeders, study pedigrees, look at offspring in the show ring, learn to make honest assessment of your dogs. No dog is perfect, sort out your own priority. Remember it takes time and dedication. However, I was very happy with all my main winners.

Minor Puppy Bitch (9, 5 absent)
1 Taylor’s FARTHINGHALL NUI NUI, a real youngster but has promise, she has a reasonable head, good reach of neck and length of body, my one real criticism I would prefer longer length of bone in the tail, moved well
2 Hill’s CARAIDEAS RAGNA, totally different to one but a very nice type, very showy, just lost out on movement
3 Collins’s SUGAR BABE AT COLLNESS
4 Burns’s PETITCHIEN’S PUSSY GALORE

Puppy Bitch (11, 3 absent)
1 Whitehill’s AMICAE TALK TALK, really stood out, she is a very self assured elegant b/w little girl , a charming extrovert with lots of quality, lovely head and expression, large mobile ears used to full advantage, moved well and kept her top line at all times, needs to firm up on the front but has all the promise which I hope she fulfills. I will watch her career with interest. BPB & BPIS
2 Anderson’s NORTHLYTE MINERVA, b/w, another good quality type a really honest elegant little girl with many of the attributes of 1, lots of promise, another day they could change places
3 Miller’s FEORLIG OHH LA LA
4 Mann’s MELANGEL TILLY TRISTAR
5 Lee-Slater’s GRAYCAZ FRANKLY MY DEAR

Junior Bitch (8, 1 absent)
1 Forth’s OMEGAVILLE MAKE ME A PETITCHIEN, this is a super top quality elegant r/w bitch, a real delight to go over, so sound, excellent body for her age, my ideal dual purpose bitch, lovely symmetrically marked head with correctly proportioned ratio of head and muzzle, good stop and rise to scull, dark eye, lovely expression. Coat fine and silky and groomed and presented perfectly, this bitch has great promise, handled so well, there was great rapport between dog and handler really completed the picture. It gave me great pleasure to award her RCC. Definitely one to watch.
2 Varley’s DENEMORE ICONS MELODY AT COXLEYVIEW (IKC), well constructed r/w, good quality and a good dual purpose type, moved well both coming and and going, a little strong in head but deserved her place
3 Whitehill’s AMICAE LOOK WHO’S TALKING
4 Wells & Brown’s METAMORPHIC ONYX
5 Beattie’s SUKANTO ANNIE TICKLEMOUSE

Yearling Bitch (4, 1 absent)
1 Thornton’s SHEVID RUMOUR HAS IT, quality b/w, nice size with good body and spring of rib and lovely depth of chest, pleasing head, dark eye, large mobile ears set at correct angle, moved well
2 Richardson’s CALAJOY MYSTIC MIA, not quite the elegance of one, slightly more solid in body but moved well, tail carried a little too upright for me
3 Geary’s TALIESYN ALCEA ROSEA

Novice Bitch (5, 2 absent)
Not one of the strongest classes.
1 Mann’s BUTTALOWIE AMAZING GRACE MELANGEL, dainty type with a good head and well placed ears, movement was a little erratic but did enough to take the class
2 Griffiths’s MELANGEL MAYBELLE AT MANAWYDDAN, much older bitch but hadn’t the finish of one, slightly sturdier but not coarse, good solid body, head could be more refined

Graduate Bitch (4, 2 absent)
1 Roberts & Smith’s PAPSHUND LADY SASHA FOR RAYOL, very good b/w mature Phalene, correct head with lovely gentle expression, good firm body, moved well, nicely carried tail adding to the finished picture
2 Wells & Brown’s METAMORPHIC ONYX, this is a really good honest bitch, fine boned, nice head and ears, will be interesting to see how she progresses, on the day had to give way to a more mature bitch.

Post Graduate Bitch (14, 4 absent)
1 Urwin’s PAPAROTTSIE GEORDIE DIVA, really good bitch, super extrovert temperament, lovely head and ears, correct bite and good clean teeth, firm body, well sprung ribs and excellent depth of chest, went well on the move
2 Lockett’s CHERYLDENE XENIA GOLDENEYE, a really dainty girl enjoying her day, she has a lovely head and expression, good body, moved well, it was a difficult choice but just felt one had the overall edge
3 Green’s MERCEDES DIAMOND AT RUBYWINGS
4 Patrick’s VOLPECULA PARURE
5 Austin & Thompson’s JHANAKIA HIGHLAND MINUET

Limit Bitch (14, 3 absent)
This was a strong class of good type bitches.
1 Cochrane’s TUTYAK FANTASY, top quality silver sable of excellent proportions, a lovely one to go over, has good body conformation, great rib cage, lovely depth of chest, very mature as she is only just over 2, pushed my RCC winner hard but lost out in the challenge by her tendency not to stand correctly at the front
2 Deamer’s BANKSHILL WEE CRACKER, different type to the first but a lovely sound bitch of excellent quality, good head, with nice expression and nicely bodied just coming into her prime. Must be in with a good chance of more success in the future
3 Kirk’s PAPPLEWICK PRIMROSE AT KIRKCHASE
4 Raper’s KAZKELL DEFINITELY DAZLING FOR KENNICE JW
5 Morton’s ABLAZZOR WILD AT HEART

Open Bitch (11, 3 absent)
The best class of the day, as it should be, the entries were some of the cream of the bitches in the country, so enjoyable to have the chance to go over them.
1 Cox’s TRICIANBRI WISH N’ KISS JW, I have seen and admired this bitch at shows and now had the pleasure of going over her. This was what I was looking for, a dainty well balanced type, her head is lovely, so correctly proportioned, dark eyes, good dentition, large mobile ears used to full advantage. Good length of neck, correct lay of shoulder and great body, super turn of stifle, her movement is light and graceful, traveling true coming and going. To finish the picture a correct silky flowing coat, again working at one with her handler, a real partnership, a mature bitch in her prime and the epitome of the picture of the elegance of the papillon, delighted to award her the CC
2 Buss’s TWIGGY CUPCAKE FOR FLUTURA JW, totally different to the first but a quality bitch, she has really good sound construction with super movement, ideal dual show/brood bitch and shown to great advantage by her handler. I would like to see more in the ring of her quality, I just preferred the fineness of 1 and she needs to coat up to complete the picture
3 Carroll & Newman’s Ir Ch DENEMORES RAGGE SENSATION
4 Robb’s GLENIREN KISS ME KATE SUNSHOO
5 MacGregor’s MEERWINGS THE SWALLOW TALE BY PYATSHAW

Special Beginners Bitch (7, 3 absent)
1 Raper’s KAZKELL DEFINITELY DAZLING FOR KENNICE JW, of larger type but still within the standard, has great quality, everything is in correct proportion and moves well, a lovely dual purpose bitch
2 Brett’s GOLDMALI GOOD GOLLY MS MOLLY, a well made bitch but not coarse, again an honest dual purpose bitch
3 Green’s MERCEDES DIAMOND AT RUBYWINGS
4 Beattie’s SUKANTO ANNIE TICKLEMOUSE

Special Phalene Open Bitch (3, 1 absent)
1 Morrell & Teague’s Multi Int Ch TEMELORA NICHOLAS’ GIFT, this is a really lovely correctly headed Phalene, a real joy to go over, so sound, showed herself off to full advantage
2 Roberts/Smith’s PAPSHUND LADY SASHA FOR RAYOL

Veteran Bitch (7, 2 absent)
1 Urwin’s BEGAVILLE GEORDIE GIRL FOR PAPAROTTSIE, 8 years, another good type from this kennel, very nice b/w, so full of life and really enjoying herself, lovely head and body, showed her attributes to advantage
2 Kirk’s KIRKCHASE RAZZLE DAZZLE ShCM, 10 year old but not acting it, smart dainty tri really full of her self, lovely soft expression, well bodied and moved with style
