My thanks to the Society’s Committee for its kind invitation to judge one of my very favourite breeds today. It was a pleasure! Thank you for your wonderful entry and the sporting manner in which you took my decisions.
When judging the Papillon, like all breeds, there are so many things to consider and in some cases the decisions were very close indeed. Breed Type is paramount and often it is difficult to get the fabulous head and ears on a well constructed body with straight legs, as well as the light, free and positive movement. In the main, I was able to do that and I was very pleased with my winners.
On the plus side there were many beautifully presented, dainty butterflies with lovely expressions and large, well-fringed ears that framed their heads. There were also some super movers – so sound, light and free – and these were a delight to watch. I thought the temperaments on the whole were sound and I loved it when I approached the table to see a gently wagging tail.
However, I was disappointed in some of the presentation. At one stage, having gone over a particular exhibit, I had to ask my steward for some hand wipes. This is inexcusable. It is not difficult to present a clean, well groomed Papillon for exhibition.
Some front assemblies left a little to be desired, not only with lack of angulation, but also the fact that the feet turned out. The standard does call for straight legs. There were also a few lacking the desired jug handle tail.
My very sincere thanks to my wonderful stewards, Mr. Terry and Mrs. Maureen Donovan who were just amazing. I shall remember their kindness and consideration as well as their quiet efficiency. Or rather, in Terry’s case, his delightfully theatrical approach!
I wish you all the very best with your lovely Papillons and congratulations to the winners.
Mrs Stephanie Rickard (Wongan – Australia)

Minor Puppy Dog (16 Entries Abs: 2)
1st: (ISHERWOOD Mr T) Afterglow Lord Helpus NAF TAF There is one word to describe this puppy and that is “stunning”. He caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring with his certain charisma. He has a masculine head with lovely dark eyes, definite stop and finely pointed muzzle. His ears are large, well set and starting to fringe. His elegant neck flows smoothly into his excellent front assembly and on to a firm level back, with good length of loin and strong hindquarters. His tail has enough lift to give the desired outline and on the move his gait is very light and free. Beautifully trained and presented, I’m certain this one has a very bright future. It gave me great pleasure to award him the RCC and Best Puppy and I was delighted to later see him win the final of the Puppy Stakes under Per Iversen from Norway.
2nd: (FRENCH Ms S) Panspayon Charlemagne At Soleona Quite a well balanced puppy with pleasing head and expression with lovely dark eyes, definite stop and finely pointed muzzle. His ears are well set and beginning to fringe. Very good front assembly with excellent fill through the chest. Well ribbed back with good length of loin. His tail could be slightly higher set, however, he uses it well on the move. His hindquarters are well shaped and his movement is free and sound.

1st: (MILLER Mrs J M) Feorlig Smarty Pants A very promising puppy with a pleasing headpiece and his dark, well placed eyes give a very intelligent expression. Ears could be a little larger. Good length of neck into an excellent front assembly with good fill through the chest. Well ribbed back with a firm topline and strong hindquarters. He is sound coming and going and has a very good side gait. Tail carried well on the move
2nd: (COOPER Messrs C &W) Wilachans Prince Rocky A well balanced puppy with a good shape to the skull, large ears and dark eyes, however, his muzzle needs to be a little more refined. Good length of neck into well laid shoulder. His chest has yet to drop and when it does, it will make a difference to his overall front assembly. He has a strong topline, is well ribbed back and his hindquarters are quite well angled. Once he settled, he moved well with his young handler. Better presentation would greatly enhance this exhibit.

His stifles are well turned and he moves around the ring lightly with freedom.
2nd: (CATON Mr J & Mrs S) Never Let Me Go Forussi at Henrix (Imp) Such a glorious coat on this young dog – so long and silky. Pleasing head and expression with well fringed ears that he uses very well. Good flow of neck into quite well laid shoulders, however, there needs to be a better return of upper arm to balance the front assembly. He has a good depth of chest, a firm topline, is well ribbed back and has excellent hindquarters. A little more lift to the tail would complete the picture. He moved soundly.

His eyes are dark and his ears are quite large and set well back on the head. His angulation is balanced front and rear and he has good legs and feet. Minor Puppy Bitch (9 Entries Abs: 2)
1st: (GOODWIN Miss D A) Paplene Regal Roxanne A beautifully balanced puppy, just six months of age. Pretty head piece with the darkest of eyes and correct ears. Very well developed through the front assembly for a puppy this age, well ribbed, good length of loin and a firm topline. Lovely tail set and carriage. Her hindquarters are well developed, however, her stifles could be slightly better turned. Apart from her other attributes, her silky coat and light, free movement assured her the top spot in this class.
2nd: (SHARP-DIXON, Mr K & REYES Mr J) Zoloto Princess A very pretty puppy with a correctly proportioned head with dark eyes, a finely pointed muzzle, definite stop and well set ears. Good neck into a developing front with fine bone and correct feet. Well ribbed back and good length of loin. Her front needs to settle on the move, however, she is just a baby and her overall breed type won her this placing today.

1st: (ORCHARD Miss S) Panspayon April Wishes Quite a well balanced puppy but she needs a little more angulation front and rear. She has a pleasing headpiece with lovely dark eyes; a definite stop and well set ears beginning to fringe. There is some depth to her chest and she is quite well ribbed back with a firm topline. A little more lift to her tail would improve the outline. A dainty puppy, she moved well and her coat is just beginning to bloom.
2nd: (WALLER Miss M C) Kazkell Theme For A Dream For Lilnrose A finely boned puppy with good length of leg. Her head is well balanced with large ears beginning to fringe. Her body is well ribbed back with a good length of loin, but at this stage of development, her angulation is unbalanced, causing her topline to rise to the rear and her front to lift on the move. She has a lovely silky coat.
