Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Championship Show 2018

28 July 2018

Before the show started, there was a lovely tribute to the late Jimmy Simpson. Not the usual sad one, but a fun one, which Jimmy would have got a good laugh from. Spoken by Queenie Bruce, who made everybody laugh.

2018 Papillon Championship Show

I would like to thank the Northern & Eastern Counties Papillon Club for inviting me to judge at their show and for the exhibitors for giving me the honour to judge their lovely dogs. I had a very enjoyable day and found many exhibits typical of the breed. I was delighted with my main winners and thrilled that my Co-Judge, Jerry Munroe and I completely agreed on all the major awards.

Minor Puppy Dog (9 entries, 2 absent)
1st: (Mesdams C Lee-Slater & C Kewley) Magic Sunrise Ace Ventura (Imp Ltv) very elegant Tri dog who presents a lovely shape when standing. Excellent head and eye with super, large flaring ears with amble fringing coming, giving a lovely expression. Nice to go over on the table with lots to like about him. Finely boned forelegs with correct hare feet. Level topline and excellent high set tail. Still needs a little time to come together on the move but with maturity I have no doubt this will come and he will be one to watch in the future.
2nd: (Jane Thompson & Sandra Austin) Melangel Highland by Design at Jhanakia B/W boy of a completely different type to 1 but with still lots to like about him. Decent size and shape. Correct head proportions with lovely dark eye and well set, large ears that he used to advantage. Enough neck and well placed shoulders. Good body and substance for age. Nice topline and tail set. Good coat of correct texture coming in. Moved out soundly. For me just not the overall elegance as 1.

1st: (Elizabeth & Karen Anderson) Northlyte Spirit of the Isle lovely sized Tri male with a super balanced head and lovely expression. Finely boned legs and good hare feet. Decent length of neck and well placed shoulders. Enough body for his age. Correct topline and correctly set tail with lovely plume. Moved soundly up and back and very balanced in profile. Just needs a little more confidence to complete the picture which I hope comes in time as I am sure he could trouble the best.
2nd: (Mrs D L Watson) Buoncasa Elf on the Shelf another Tri boy and the baby of the class but he did not let the others over shadow him with his confident, cheeky persona. Very pretty head of the correct proportions and lovely eye. Well set, large fringed ears used to advantage. All of a piece as you go over him and has a lovely level topline and ideally set tail. Moved out well, just not the finish and maturity of my winner.

Pretty head, well marked with good stop and cheeky expression. Large, mobile ears with enough fringing. Good to go over on the table. Finely boned legs and correct hare feet. Topline held level at all times. Tail set on high with good plume. 2nd: (Mr C & Mrs L Christensen) Tresor’s Kings Valiant Lancelot very typical & attractive Tri boy who has a superb head with blaze, finely pointed muzzle and lovely dark eye. He possesses the most beautifully fringed ears, which are large, well set and used to advantage. Correct bite. Good length of neck. Well bodied with a good spring of rib and strong loin. Level topline and correctly set ‘jug handle’ tail which for me could have more plume. Well turned stifle. Many thanks to the Committee for their kind invitation to judge bitches, and for their generous hospitality on the day. As usual, the show had a warm and welcoming atmosphere with lots of thoughtful extras for the exhibitors. The Club President Queenie Bruce gave a moving tribute to Jimmy Simpson, a founder member of the Club and former Club Chairman. Jimmy had devoted much of his life to the Club and was a great supporter of new comers in the breed. Indeed, it was Jimmy who encouraged me to start judging, and it was he who gave me my first judging appointment at Selby Canine Society. I will always be grateful to Jimmy for setting me on the path that ultimately led to my appointment here today at my favourite show.

Thanks also go to the exhibitors for their support and for allowing me to judge their dogs. I was very pleased with the entry, and having been away from the English shows for a while many of the exhibits were new to me, and I felt I was seeing the breed though fresh eyes. Whilst I was more than happy with my winners, there were a couple of points that concerned me. It seems that in some lines heads are changing, with quite a few girls being somewhat workman like in appearance. For me the papillon should always be a pretty, and bitches in particular should look feminine. We also need to watch construction as some otherwise good exhibits had lazy fronts, standing at 10-2. Finally, I found several crooked, and even one twisted tail. It is important to remember that as breeders, exhibitors and judges we are guardians of the breed and we have a responsibility to safeguard the integrity and quality of the dogs we produce and those we bring in to the show ring.

For Best in Show, my co-judge and I happily agreed on the dog Ch FEORLIG SMARTY PANTS JW ShCM, bred by Jenny Miller and owned by Kirsty Miller and Evan Ryan. Congratulations to all concerned with this lovely boy.

Minor Puppy Bitch (8 entries, 2 absent)
1st: (Mrs Lynn George-Evans) Jorgealin Tri Some Magic; tri bitch. This very pretty 7 months old bitch has a lovely balanced head with good proportions, correct bite and dark, inquisitive eyes. Her ears are correctly set, with good fringing for her age, framing her face well and enhancing her pretty expression. She stands and moves confidently, holding her top line all the while and her tail is set high and carried well. She was presented in immaculate condition and obviously adores her handler/owner; a lovely start to my judging today.
2nd: (Miss S Orchard) Panspayon Gold Fever; red and white bitch. At 6 months old this girl is still quite raw and very much a baby, but with nothing to hide she has much to commend her. She has a well balanced head, good stop, correct bite and dark, well set eyes. She has large, rounded ears which are well fringed and correctly set. In profile she shows a super outline with level top line, good reach of neck and a high set tail. On the move she was lively and spirited, and was obviously enjoying her day out.
3rd: (Mary Whitehill & P Urwin) Amicae Rosie Bud; red sable 7 months old. This pretty, well marked bitch has a well proportioned head set off by beautiful dark eyes and correctly set, rounded ears. She was a little unsettled on the table but recovered well once on the floor where she showed off her level top line and good tail set and carriage.

1st: (Mrs S Stanbury) Inixia Glamour Girl; 9 months old black and white. This beautifully marked and well named girl caught my eye as she entered the ring. She has a very pretty head with dark, well set eyes giving her a bright and inquisitive look. She has well fringed, correctly set ears which she used expressively. She is well constructed, with a level top line, high set tail and parallel movement both front and rear. A quality bitch who’s progress I will follow with interest. I was delighted to award her Best Puppy Bitch and later see her go Reserve Best Puppy in Show.
2nd: (Kay Stewart & Kirsten Stewart-Knight) Denemore Ragge Knight Story at Tussalud NAF; 7 months old tri. This young girl is balanced and well constructed, though a heavier type than 1. She has a well proportioned head with dark, expressive eyes, correct bite and well set, rounded ears. Her coat is of the correct texture and was beautifully presented. She has a level top line and good tail set, and moved with confidence around the ring, being very attentive to her handler/owner. <
3rd: (Miss S Orchard) Ablazzor Angel of the North at Panspayon; 9 months old. This tri girl has a nicely balanced head with a well defined stop, dark eyes and correctly set, well fringed ears. She has a lovely profile with a level top line and correct tail set and carriage. She was lively and energetic on the floor but, perhaps in her enthusiasm today, she showed a tendency to high stepping at the front which affected her balance on the move.

Junior Bitch (9 entries, 2 absent)
1st: (C & A Thornton) Collness Kiss n Tell Shevid; 12 months old. This nicely marked black and white girl has dark, well set eyes, a good stop and large rounded ears. She needs to settle more on the table but is much more at home on the floor where she gave a good account of herself. She is well balanced in her construction and moved well and with confidence.
2nd: (Susan Lanson) Cantoverde Royal Chyna;18 months old tri. This strikingly marked bitch is dainty and well constructed and has lots of personality. She has a nicely proportioned head with a well defined stop, correct bite and dark and inquisitive eyes. Her ears are set at the correct angle, are well fringed and were used to advantage. She has a good overall shape, is lovely for size and is very attentive to her handler/owner, though she was high stepping a bit at the front today.
3rd: (E L Morley) Jorgealin Indian Magic at Lizlanmor; 18 months old. This beautifully marked tri has the darkest of eyes, a balanced muzzle, correct bite and well set ears, all of which combine to give a very pretty and soft expression. In profile she has a good overall shape with an elegant reach of neck, level top line and high set tail which she shows off proudly. I would prefer a slightly straighter front, though she does move soundly and with purpose, and is very much in tune with her handler/owner.

Yearling Bitch (4 entries, 1 absent)
1st: (Miss K F Miller & Mr E L Ryan) Feorlig Wake up Maggie JW; 2 years old. This sable bitch with black mask and pencil blaze demanded attention when she entered the ring. She has a super shape with level top line, moderate neck and well set tail. She has a beautifully silky textured coat which was presented to perfection. She is dainty without being delicate, and moves soundly and with confidence. Up close, she has the prettiest of heads; large, rounded ears and dark, well set eyes with a mischievous expression. I was very happy to award her Reserve Best Bitch and the Reserve CC.
2nd: (Angela Kelton) Adnamashan Still Game; 19 months old tri. My notes start with the words Fire Cracker – and she certainly was! She is a well marked, pretty bitch with bags of attitude and fun. She has a lovely balanced head framed by correctly set, well fringed ears; level top line and good tail set. She is quite compact in construction but moves with plenty of drive and confidence.
3rd: (Mr P & Mrs J A Hill) Caraideas Rainbows End; 14 months. This is a lovely red sable bitch with the darkest and most expressive of eyes. She has such an elegant outline with a level top line, good tail set/carriage, super angles and she moves parallel both front and rear. Her coat is silky in texture and needs time to settle but was well presented. With a little more time to mature and build her confidence I’m sure this girl will have a bright future.

Novice Bitch (6 entries, 3 absent)
1st: (Mrs S Stanbury) Inixia Luscious Lucy; 9 months red sable and white. Litter sister to my puppy class winner and very much cast from the same mould. Another pretty head with large, rounded and well fringed ears which never rested. Graduate Bitch (2 entries, 1 absent)
1st: (Mr A May, Mrs C Foynes & Mrs M Whitehill) Lafay has the Last Word with Amicae; 2 years old. This red sable bitch is another with a mischievous expression and loads of attitude. She has a slightly rounded head with a well defined stop, dark inquisitive eyes and well set ears, which she used well. She is finely built and just needs to tighten up her front more. She was lively and enthusiastic on the move and was thoroughly enjoying her day out.

Post Graduate Bitch (5 entries, 1 absent)
1st: (Miss D A Goodwin) Paplene Regal Roxanne; 3 years old. This cheeky black and white girl was a clear winner for me today. Her pretty head, framed by well fringed ears, has the darkest of well set eyes, which gave the softest of expressions but at the same time giving a glint of mischief too. She has a lovely straight front, good reach of neck, level top line and correct tail carriage. She was lively and energetic on the move and very attentive to her handler/owner.
2nd: (Laura Mandelson) Maridova Victorias Dream in Honrukai JW SHCM (IKC); 3 years old. This tri girl, despite being more robust in build than 1, is certainly not heavy in type. She has rich tan markings and large, rounded ears, dark eyes and a correct bite. Her top line is level and she has a good tail set, but I would have preferred a little more reach of neck to give a more balanced outline. She moved steadily and with confidence.
3rd: (Mrs G A Geary) Taliesyn Traveller Joy; 4 years old. This black and white girl was also of a more solid type than the class winner but is still a well balanced and nicely constructed girl. She has well placed, dark eyes and correctly set ears. She has a level top line which she holds both standing and on the move.

2nd: (Miss Sophie Langdon) Shadowknight Ebony Rose of Skyvana; 21 months old. This beautifully presented black and white girl has a lovely overall shape, with a level top line and correct tail set/carriage balanced by good reach of neck. Her head is nicely framed by the largest of heavily fringed ears and the whole picture is very elegant. Hands on, this girl needs to body up more. On the floor she was moved with plenty of speed which perhaps didn’t allow her to give of her best today.
3rd: (Mrs Eileen Roberts & Miss Caroline Smith) Semicvetik Dayana Devine; 3 years old, hound tri. This Phalene has the prettiest of heads with well placed tri markings. Her ears are correctly set and hang close to her head. They are well fringed and serve to enhance the gentle expression of her dark eyes. On the table she presented a lovely profile with a level top line and good tail set. She is well made at the front and moves well; her rear movement was a little erratic today. Her coat is single and silky in texture, and was well presented.

She has good reach of neck leading to a level top line and high set tail. She is well constructed with a straight front and moved well around the ring. Her eyes are dark and perhaps a little larger in size, giving a slightly more open expression. Her ears are large, rounded and well fringed and she used these very expressively; engaging well with her handler/ owner.
3rd: (Mr P & Mrs J A Hill) Caraideas True Colours; 4.5 years old, tri. This compact, smaller type girl is nicely put together with straight front and rear, level top line and correct tail set/carriage. 1st: (Mrs J Davidson-Poston) Multi Ch (3) Spinillons Classic Caress JS SHCM, CW14 PPVN15, Ir Jun Ch; 6 years old. This black and white girl is soundly constructed and has so much to offer. Her evenly marked head is balanced and shows good proportions, with a well defined stop; clean and correct dentition; dark, sparkling eyes, all framed by rounded, well fringed ears. On the table you are able to appreciate her balanced construction, level top line, correct tail set and carriage, and in addition she feels toned and well muscled. She has a bright and attentive expression, is well schooled and is very much in tune with her handler/owner.
2nd: (Mrs C Lee-Slater) Ch Jorgealin Cast a Spell for Kingshaven; 3 years old. This dainty and very elegant tri bitch also caught my eye in the ring. Of a lighter frame than 1, she is, none the less, soundly put together with everything in the right place. She has correctly set round eyes, a well defined stop and balanced muzzle with correct and clean bite, all of which combine to give a very pretty expression. She stands four square with a good reach of neck, level top line and correct tail set. She was a little unsettled on the move today, otherwise the placings could well have changed. A lovely, quality exhibit.
3rd: (Mrs Lynn George-Evans) Ch Jorgealin Moon Magic SHCM; another quality Champion bitch; unfortunate to meet 1 and 2 today.

Veteran Bitch (5 entries, 0 absent)
1st: (Miss E & Mrs M Buss) Ch Twiggy Cupcake of Flutura JW; 8 years old. An old favourite of mine who I have judged before. As a veteran she still maintains her great outline and balance, with elegant reach of neck, level top line and is beautifully straight both front and rear. Bright eyed and bushy tailed, she was presented to perfection as always and is a real credit to her owner. An easy winner for Best Veteran Bitch and then Best Veteran in Show.
2nd: (Mrs J Davidson-Poston) Ch, Ir Ch, Multi Vet Ch (4) Spinillons Saffire JW SHCM, PPVN16; 11 years old and not a grey hair in sight. This extremely pretty and well marked tri girl has lovely dark eyes and excellent dentition. She stands four square and carries her high set tail well. She has a profuse coat which was beautifully presented but perhaps made her appear a bit short in neck today. Her well fringed ears frame her face beautifully when alert. She moved with an energy and drive that could teach some younger bitches a lesson or two.
3rd: (Mrs J L Green) Mercedes Diamond at Rubywings; 7 years old. A lovely profile and shape to this tri bitch who presents a level top line and good tail set/carriage. She has a pretty head with dark eyes and well set ears. She was steady on the floor and moved well around the ring.

1st: (Mrs J Davidson-Poston & Miss K Farrell) Ari De Pari Eadin Darlyn Spinillons (Imp Rus) (Phalene); 18 months old. This gorgeous tri-colour bitch was a real pleasure to judge. Watching her across the ring it was easy to see her clean and balanced outline with everything in moderation. She stood perfectly and elegantly with a level top line, good reach of neck and well set/carried tail complemented by her straight and parallel front and rear. Her head is very feminine and beautifully proportioned; her ears are correctly placed and she has the most expressive eyes. I had no hesitation in awarding her the Bitch CC and was delighted to see her go Reserve Best in Show as well as Best Phalene in Show.
2nd: (Mrs Eileen Roberts & Miss Caroline Smith) Semicvetik Dayana Devine Panspayon (Imp)
3rd: (Mrs T Collins) Bonmeshays Shady Lady; 5 years old. This black and white girl is well marked with lovely dark eyes giving a soft expression. Unfortunately today her ears are needing to settle more. She moved well and was very attentive to her handler/owner.
