Total Entry: 171 dogs, making 203 entries, plus 5 NFC

I was delighted to be invited to judge the dogs at this show. Papillons are a breed I have admired for a great many years. As a schoolboy I used to attend all of the Merseyside Toydog Shows and the breed always had a strong following in the area with exhibitors of the calibre of Laurence Rattigan, Mabel Jukes and of course, Ellis Hulme. Thank you to the officers and committee for their kindness and hospitality, my two excellent stewards and to the exhibitors for their sporting good manners.
Tom Mather

I was delighted to be asked to judge bitches at The Papillon Cub Championship show, my co-judge and judging the dogs was the very well respected toy judge Mr Tom Mather, for the principal awards I am delighted to say all decisions were unanimous.

I would like to thank my two very efficient stewards for the smooth running of my ring.

I will say that since last judging the breed bodies have improved greatly, however two things that did worry me greatly were the two piece heads, ie 50 per cent muzzle and 50 per cent skull, rather than what the breed standard calls for, ie the muzzle to be one third the length of head, and this changes the whole look and expression of our lovely breed. Size does also concern me, both 8 and 11 inches are totally correct but in some cases when at the taller end of the standard and above there were some very coarse heads and too much strong bone, we want good quality fine bone, to give the dainty appearance called for in the standard.

I would like to thank exhibitors for their entry which I had much pleasure in judging and I was very pleased with my winners.
