Papillon Club of Scotland Open Show 2017

26 February 2017

Judge: Nadia Angharad Al-Bazi (Phylcher)

Many thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge their club show. The hospitality received was outstanding, with committee members going out of their way to ensure my mother and I were well looked after. I would also like to thank my steward who did a fantastic job throughout the day. I would also like to commend the exhibitors for their good sportsmanship throughout the show, something I have noted since owning my first Papillon in 2009 – something other breeds could benefit from developing. I was extremely happy with my line up’s in both dogs and bitches, with puppies and juniors showing immense promise. I was particularly impressed to find later that my BIS and RBIS were full siblings, both of high quality. However, a few of things I found particularly lacking were depth of chest, disproportionate heads and lack of daintiness that the breed standard calls for. Although a toy breed, Papillons and Phalenes alike should have plenty of body, muzzles were often far longer than the 1/3 of head size which contributes to the detraction from the dainty butterfly we know.

Cl. 1: Veteran Dog/Bitch (5, 2A)

  1. SMITH’S Ch. Papplewick Pretty In Pink JW Sh Cm – BVIS/BB/BOS/RBIS – A lovely, well balanced and dainty red and white sable bitch with the sweetest of expressions. Neatly proportioned head with well rounded, large, mobile, fringed ears set towards rear of head. She has a good depth of chest with frill to complete. Forequarters good with elbows placed close to chest. Good length of neck accentuating into well placed shoulders and into a strong and level topline. Hindquarters were strong with good turn of stifle. Tail set fairly high, of good length falling into a plume. Coat was of a fine and silky texture, bone fine complete with hare feet. She displayed strong, unrestricted movement throughout her time in the ring, which made watching her encapsulating – I couldn’t believe she was a veteran.
  2. SKELTON’S Winterwings Sea The Stars
  3. MACGREGOR’S Meerwings The Swallow Tale By Pyatshaw

Cl.2: Minor Puppy Dog (1)

  1. WHITEHILL & URWIN’S  Paparottsie Heart Beats At Amicae – A nicely made, alert black and white dog. Proportionate head with dark eye, ears fairly large and rounded, held fairly high with enough furnishings. A coat of good texture with nice, fine but strong bone. Elbows fairly close to chest developing into parallel legs with hare feet. Good level topline with a good amount of body and well developed hindquarters. Movement needs to tighten up but this should develop with maturity. A lovely puppy!

Cl.3: Puppy Dog (2, 1A)

  1. ANDERSON’S Northlyte Lightning Storm – BPD – Again a very lovely puppy. Tri dog with a lovely expression. Large, rounded and mobile ears which were set towards rear of a proportionate head. Overall, a very pleasing puppy with positive forequarters and hindquarters, good turn of stifle prevalent. Coat texture fine and silky, with fine but strong bone. Topline could be more level but didn’t detract from his overall quality. Lovely free-flowing movement, could settle a bit more on the move, but as a puppy I was glad to see him enjoying himself and he should settle as he matures.

Cl. 4: Junior Dog (3)

  1. PATRICK’S Volpecula Handsome Is – One of the daintier dogs exhibited, this black and white dog has a lovely expression and is lively and alert in nature. His head was proportionate with fairly large, mobile and well furnished ears set at the correct 45 degree angle, towards rear of head. Nice, fine and silky coat. Elbows fairly close to chest with parallel front legs of fine bone. Topline good but would like a little more rib and depth of chest. Tail set good, falling into plume. Movement good but had some minor plaiting on front.
  2. DAVIDSON’S Rozamie Roberto
  3. WHITEHILL’S Amicae Hugs And Kisses

Cl.5: Maiden Dog (0)

Cl.6: Novice Dog (2, 1 A)

  1. PATRICK’S Volpecula The Early Bird – A perfect tri, this dog was again dainty but extremely well balanced. Nicely proportioned head with well set, large, mobile and well furnished ears. Nice dark, rounded ears set fairly low into head. No criticisms regarding his overall structure which was evident how he moved so freely around the ring. Coat of a lovely, silky and fine texture with fine bone and hare feet. A lovely dog.

Cl. 7: Post Grad Dog (4)

  1. HATCH’S Amicae Call Me Bad Macstrack – RBD – An outstanding tri dog, he excels in breed quality and is one to watch in the future. Dainty in type, he is a nicely made and well balanced dog, not overdone in any way. Although quite heavily marked, his head is proportionate and gives a lively and alert expression. A good amount of neck developing into well placed shoulders and a strong, level topline. Elbows close to chest, of which there was enough. Good spring of rib and length of loin. Well developed stifle. Of fine bone with parallel fore and hind legs with hare feet. Tail set high, length of tail good and arching over into plume. An exquisite mover, free from restriction and positive throughout. Very close to awarding BD, just needs to mature more.
  2. ANDERSON’S Northlyte Genesis
  3. HILL’S Caraideas Orpheus
  4. SAVAGE’S Abbeytons Jester

Cl. 8: Limit Dog (6, 2 A)

  1. HATCH’S Macstrak Jack Daniel – A well balanced, dainty black and white dog. Alert expression placed into a nicely proportioned head with beautifully set ears and fringing. One of the few with a good depth of chest, elbows of which were close to, ample body with a strong level topline. Well developed stifle. Bone fine but strong. Nice tail set with long enough tail, falling into plume. Excellent mover.
  2. PATRICK’S Volpecula TammieNoreen Suniren
  3. MACGREGOR’S Craigaber Rolex
  4. MCRINDLE’S Kazzlyn Rainbow Warrior

Cl. 9: Open Dog (3)

  1. SMITH’S Papplewick Penhaligion At Papplewick Sh Cm – BD/BIS – Again, a beautiful example of the breed. A red sable and white, this dog was balanced, dainty and true to breed standard. A good amount of coat, he was the complete picture. A well proportioned head with narrower blaze than RBIS, his large, rounded, mobile and well furnished ears which were set at 45 degrees were well set towards the rear of his head. His beautiful, dark rounded eyes gave the most lovely of expressions. Good amount of neck falling into well placed, sloping shoulders and thence into a strong and level topline. Enough chest with elbows close to, forelegs parallel. A good spring of rib with good length of loin. Forequarters well developed and again parallel. Nice, fine bone with hare feet to complete. Coat in immaculate condition and of a beautiful fine and silky texture. Tail set high with a long and well fringed tail falling into a plume. Again a beautiful, free-flowing mover who appeared to glide across the ring. Alert and happy throughout his time in the ring, I cannot stress his quality enough. A future star I’m sure.
  2. ANDERSON AND COMBRIE-BRYANT’S Frasermar Storm In the Snow
  3. MOONEY’S Adnamashan Jack The Lad At Bankshill

Cl. 10: Minor Puppy Bitch (2)

  1. MONTGOMERY’S Papplewick Pride & Joy At Carrollryan – A dainty tri bitch with lovely rounded ears set at 45 degrees. Good head with dark eyes giving a nice expression. Enough depth of chest and spring of rib for a puppy, completed with fine bone and a nice coat. Good turn of stifle, but moving slightly wide behind.
  2. WHITEHILL AND FOYNES Lafay Has The Last Words With Amicae

Cl. 11: Puppy Bitch (1)

  1. HILL’S Caraideas Rhapsody In Blue – RBB/BPB/BPIS – Another lovely red sable and white of whom caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring. Overall a very balanced, happy puppy. Good sized and rounded ears with enough furnishings for a puppy. Lovely shaped head with dark eyes placed fairly low into skull. Nice length of neck accentuating into well placed sloping shoulders. Elbows close to chest with good spring of rib with good length of loin. Tail of reasonable length, falling nicely into a plume. Fine bone completed with hare feet. Movement free-flowing and a joy to watch. A very deserving winner.

Cl. 12: Junior Bitch (1)

  1. WHITEHILL’S Rozamie Madame Marcelle – A well proportioned head on the whole, although would like a little more rounded between ears. Ears large and round, set well with good furnishings. Good length of neck into well placed shoulders and onto a strong topline. Elbows close to chest with a nice spring of rib and good turn of stifle. Coat silky and bone fine. Movement free from restriction.

Cl.13: Maiden Bitch (0)

Cl.14: Novice Bitch (1)

  1. JOHNSTON’S Dourhu Rosa Is Red – A dainty red sable and white bitch. Ears nicely set with good furnishings but would prefer ears slightly larger. Proportionate head with an alert and bold expression. Structure on the whole I couldn’t really fault aside from slightly more depth of chest being needed. Coat fine and silky and bone fine. A lovely mover.

Cl.15: Post Graduate Bitch (4)

  1. HILL’S Caraideas Hope – Another dainty red sable and white bitch. Although of a mainly solid head proportions couldn’t be faulted. Ears of medium size and dark. Ears set well towards rear of head, which were of ample fringing. Good length of neck and well placed shoulders with sturdy topline. Good length of body but would prefer more spring of rib. Tail set high, tail of medium length, falling well into plume. Good fine bone with correct hare feet.
  2. BREEN’S Grinsdales Chrystal At Kylecroft
  3. JOHNSTON’S Dourhu Capercaille
  4. WATSON’S Dahlia Mersana

Cl.16: Limit Bitch (2, 1A)

  1. MCRINDLE’S Kazzlyn Rainbow Rose – Tri bitch with some speckling. Well proportioned head, but slightly flat between ears. Lovely ears which were large, rounded but could have been used more. Would prefer daintier but structurally she excelled in terms of depth of chest and spring of rib and overall cannot be faulted on conformation. Lovely coat in terms of texture and length. Bone fine. Nice mover.

Cl. 17: Open Bitch (5, 2A)

  1. SMITH’S Adinaken Pretty Puzzled – Another tri bitch with some speckling. Large, rounded and mobile ears set well at 45 degrees. Head nice, of good proportions. Rounded eyes lovely and dark, placed fairly low into head. Structurally faultless, very well developed hindquarters. Nice, strong and fine bone with good textured coat. A lovely, positive free-mover. Overall a lovely bitch who I’m sure will excel in the future.
