South of England Papillon Club Championship Show 2018

05 August 2018

Judge: Dr Francis Yeoh

There was an entry of 103 Papillons with only a few absentees. There was a good representation of the breed and the many excellent winners convincingly reflect the high standards achieved by the breeders. It was a delight to see a good number of quality youngsters in the puppy classes, as they determine the future successes. One outstanding feature is temperaments sustained by the exhibits throughout the proceedings. Head properties particularly regarding the balance of skull and muzzle are prerequisites are of very good save for a few. I favoured those with a slightly rounded skull with a finely pointed muzzle. Of course, large flaring ears with luxuriant fringes enhanced the expression and therefore influenced the placings. There were only a handful that I found to be heavy in bone and coarse in head properties. Movement is excellent in the majority of the exhibits. Temperaments are also excellent. Movement was generally of a high standard although a number of otherwise excellent exhibits were a tad erratic in action.

An exhibit that carries its head correctly, maintaining a level top-line on the move ensures an ‘alert bearing’ and this also influenced the placings. My principal winners not only reflect these attributes but they also have quality and showmanship. I extend my sincere appreciation to the exhibitors for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship and the committee for ensuring that the show ran ever so smoothly.
