Three Counties Championship Show 2018

09 June 2018

Papillon Judge: Mrs S Morrell
Toy Group Judge: Mr Tony Allcock MBE
Best in Show Judge: Mr A H Brace

My thanks to the officers and committee for this appointment but it was, however, unfortunate that Jenny Edson, who was originally due to judge this show, was , unable to do so. I think that we all wish Jenny better health for the future.
I would like to thank all those exhibitors who entered under me and hope that you all enjoyed your day as much as I did. We have such a lovely breed and we need to maintain the overall appearance of the dainty little butterfly dog, so there are a few points I would mention. Overall, the standard and general presentation of the dogs I saw was fairly good and I was particularly pleased with my placings. One point that I have noticed is the ‘ten to two’ stance of the front legs as opposed to a nice straight front. Head shapes are also appearing quite varied. Instead of the correct third to two thirds proportions, muzzles have become either too long or too broad and ‘coarse, rather than the fine muzzle as called for in the standard. Dentition on the whole was good with the majority having correct bites. On the exhibits presented to me, I found that overall movement in general has improved since I last judged two years ago.

Minor Puppy Dog (6 Entries Abs: 3)
1st: (THOMPSON, Mrs J & AUSTIN Mrs S) Melangel Highland By Design At Jhanakia Little black and white boy has showmanship written all over him and so attentive to his handler moving with drive around the ring like one much more mature in years. Pretty head but remaining masculine in looks and with a dark eye, well rounded ears and fine muzzle. Good reach of neck leading to a level top line which he held on the move and whilst standing. Sound in front and rear movement. I will watch his progress with interest.
2nd: (LANGDON Miss S C) Skyvana Van Helsing Slightly smaller than one but with loads of attitude which, today, made him a little jumpy and not as responsive to his handler who, today, was not his usual handler, but he went well coming and going with good action in front and at the rear. Well shaped head and ears. Top line was very level and led to a nicely set tail. Needs to lift a little more in leg, but he has time on his side.
3rd: (BROADHURST Mrs H E) Paparottsie Neon Blue at Thistlemist

Puppy Dog (7 Entries Abs: 1)
1st: (STANBURY Mrs S) Inixia Ever Ready Eddie Lots to like about this little dog who moved out well both in front and behind and maintained a level top line throughout carrying a well plumed tail over his back. Well shaped skull with finest of muzzle, darkest of eyes and nicely shaped ears. Another fine example from this kennel and another, who I believe should have a bright future ahead of him.
2nd: (URQUHART Mr G & Mrs C) Blackpark Tim A red sable dog, slightly longer in body and looking very mature for his eleven months of age. Head proportions were in line with the standard and with dark eyes and pigmentation. Good reach of neck. Needs a little more body but that should come with maturity. He gave a very elegant appearance on the move carrying his tail well over his back.

Res: (STANBURY Mrs S) Inixia Dressed To Kill

Junior Dog (2 Entries Abs: 0)
1st: (STANBURY Mrs S) Inixia Fully Charged This red sable boy and litter brother to my previous class winner, is slightly larger than his brother, who moved well both in front and behind as one expects from this kennel. Carried the largest of ears over strong head proportions with a slightly more exaggerated muzzle. Good reach of neck, well rounded in rib and firm body.
2nd: (MCMILLAN, Mrs L S & BARROW Mrs S T) Minackcove Poneto Smaller in size to 1. Nicely rounded skull and fine muzzle and with well set on ears with good fringing. Neck of good length and tail making a high arch over his back and carried correctly. A little unresponsive to handler today when looking at his bite. Moved out well.

Yearling Dog (6 Entries Abs: 2)
1st: (MALCOLM Mr D & Mrs H) Feorlig It Must’ve Been Love A happy little boy enjoying his day out and vocalising his enjoyment whilst awaiting his critique. Very pretty red sable who is maturing well with well rounded ears set on a skull of correct proportions .Good reach of neck leading to a nicely curved tail which he carried high over his back. Moved out well and was very attentive to his handler. Well presented and handled
2nd: (SLATER Mrs L) Baillion Black Obsidian An attractive black and white boy whose head shape, good ears and fringing, well carried tail, set on correctly and overall movement, was good. He is very different in size and structure to 1, as smaller and finer in bone but not detracting from the quality of either of these 2 dogs, it was a difficult decision between them as both have good qualities but 1 had the edge in maturity of coat and mature finish. But he has time on his side.

Post Graduate Dog (7 Entries Abs: 0)
1st: (BOUGHTON, Mrs A & STANBURY Mrs S) Inixia Follower Of Fashion Another quality dog from this kennel who has the head of correct proportions with a well defined stop, fine muzzle, well rounded ears with adequate fringing and dark eyes. Moved true both going and coming and presented a good overall outline in profile with level top line, well plumed tail and good reach of neck.. Feet were in the correct position when standing.
2nd: (BROADHURST Mrs H E) Thistlemist the Dream Genie This is a dog I have seen improve each time I have seen him, and he did not disappoint today. On first appearance he showed elegance with fine but strong bone, well shaped head with defined stop and well rounded ears with adequate amount of fringing for his age. Moved out well apart from wanting to leap on his handler a couple of times but his movement was true. Good reach of neck leading to a level top line, the latter of which he maintained on the move. Pushed hard for the number 1 spot but not as settled today but when settled it will be interesting to watch his show career.

Limit Dog (9 Entries Abs: 0)
1st: (CHRISTENSEN Mrs L & Mr C) Tresor’s Kings Valiant Lancelot A beautiful example that I would define as a ‘classic’, and, as usual, well presented and handled. On going over him I found a firm body with good spring of rib, a well shaped skull with well defined stop, and large mobile ears with an abundance of fringing, a fine muzzle, dark eyes and the sweetest of expressions. On the move, his movement both front and rear was true displaying a well carried and plumed tail of correct set. Overall a very elegant and ‘classy’ boy. Today he was unlucky to meet the CC winner but I was very happy to award him the RDCC , but I am sure that his final ticket will not be far away.
2nd: (WIGGINS Mrs J) Rozamie Monsieur Arthur For Scapafield JW Another shining example of the breed who was unfortunate to meet 1 today. Totally different in build and style to 1 but with a lot to like about him. Excellent profile and sound mover who covered the ground with ease. Good head proportions with a well defined stop, dark eyes, and ears set at the correct 45 degree angle.

Open Dog (11 Entries Abs: 2)
1st: (CATON Mr J & Mrs S) Never Let Me Go Forussi at Henrix (Imp) Once again, this little dog took my eye as soon as he came into the ring. So much to like about him with his personality plus overall conformation and movement. The standard calls for a fine, dainty dog with a well defined stop leading to a finely pointed muzzle, all of which I found in this lovely example of the breed. He has a good reach of neck leading to a beautiful topline and well arched tail carried high over his back. He showed himself to full advantage and attentive to handler the whole time, both in his breed class and again in the group and BIS ring, never letting his handler down. I awarded him his first RCC as a youngster and was pleased to award him the top honours today, BOB, and then watch him go on to win toy group 1.
2nd: (MILLER, Miss K F & RYAN Mr E L) Ch Feorlig Smarty Pants JW Sh.CM Another lovely example of the breed and unlucky to meet 1 today. A different type but such a lot to like about this little boy. His head shape is characteristic of the breed with a well defined stop and fine muzzle. Dentition is good with correct bite. Coat of medium length carrying the correct furnishings without over exaggeration of length. He moved out with purpose and drive and was true in front and rear motion. Extremely well handled and presented as one sees from this kennel.

Veteran Dog (7 Entries Abs: 1)
1st: (LETCH Miss C) Conysluck Master Pip A lovely class of veterans and I was spoilt for choice as all had their own attributes, but my winner was worthy of the no.1 spot due to his beautiful flowing action on the move with such a correct rear and front movement- so parallel at the rear and reach at the front. I would describe his head shape as the ‘older’ type, being slightly shorter in muzzle but still with the correct proportions to his skull. Well rounded ears completed his head picture. He made a superb outline in profile and on going over him, I found him to be well muscled and in good overall shape for his 9 and a half years.
2nd: (STANBURY Mrs S) Inixia Delightful Dan JW Sh.CM A tough decision between this little man and my class winner as both are of similar type. Slightly finer in both body and head shape than 1, and moved out well on a loose lead. This compact little man showed himself well and presented a good reach of neck, level topline, held on the move, and excellent well arched tail carried high over his back. Again, well muscled, well rounded but firm body and good length of loin. Well turned stifle which enabled him to move out with drive. Another good example from this kennel.

Minor Puppy Bitch (8 Entries Abs: 0)
A very nice class of babies that left me spoilt again for choice as so many deserved high placings.
1st: (ORCHARD Miss S) Ablazzor Angel Of The North At Panspayon Nice little 8 month old tri colour girl who, for one so young, enjoyed her day and showed with maturity for her handler. Well proportioned head shape topped with large mobile ears with the promise of good fringing yet to come. Good reach of neck and level topline which she held well on the move. Still showing in her puppy coat, but there are signs of a fine and silky texture coat coming through. Moved out true both away and coming. One go watch for the future.
2nd: (MASKELL Mrs K) Kazkell Milo’s Dream Another little tri girl, slightly smaller than 1, but another looking and showing as one beyond her tender years. Very responsive to her handler and moved soundly with drive and purpose. Well placed and arched tail carried high over her back. Very attractive head of correct proportion topped with large, mobile ears. Exquisite and soft expression from the darkest of eyes. I believe that these first two will change places on a regular basis.

Puppy Bitch (5 Entries Abs: 1)
1st: (URQUHART Mr G & Mrs C) Blackpark Patricia Took my eye as soon as she entered the ring with her overall presence and maturity. She could easily enter and and hold her own in an open class. She has the elegance and finesse typical of a true papillon. Her head shape, topped with large and mobile ears, and ending in a fine muzzle, is true to the standard. There is promise of fringing yet to come on her ears, but when it comes it will complete the picture. She is, however, still only a youngster of 11 months so has time on her side. Her movement in profile showed her moving out with drive with a good reach in front. Slightly longer in body but not detracting from an excellent overall picture and I was happy to award her the RBCC today and will watch her future with interest.
2nd: (GEARY Mrs G A) Taliesyn Black Azalea A well put together little girl who would, I am sure, be welcomed in any kennel. Smaller than 1 and when moving out showed parallel at the rear and a correct front movement. Head and skull of correct proportions with a well defined stop. Level topline held on the move and well set on tail carried well over her back. Made a lovely profile and with lots to like about her but, unfortunately today, was outshone by number 1’s overall presence and maturity.

Junior Bitch (4 Entries Abs: 0)
1st: (COX Mr B D S & Mrs P A) Denemore Juniper Berrie At Tricianbri Lots to like about this little bitch who I would describe as an ‘honest’ bitch and good ‘all rounder’, and I was not disappointed when going over her. Slightly broader head and muzzle but still maintaining the elegance I like to see in a Papillon. Dark, well rounded eyes and correct ear set. Level topline descending from a good reach of neck and leading to a well carried tail. She is well bodied with a good spring of rib. Movement was true both coming and going.
2nd: (STANBURY Mrs S) Inixia Glamour Girl Another fine example from this kennel and certainly living up to her name. A little unsettled today but once settled a little more she moved like a dream with movement true both front & rear. Her topline was level leading to a well arched tail correctly set. Well shaped skull and fine muzzle with darkest of eyes. Ears set at the correct angle and she mobilised them to her advantage. Good length of neck. Still only a baby, so another with time on her side and who I will watch to see her reach her full potential.

Yearling Bitch (6 Entries Abs: 0)
1st: (CARROLL, Mr S & NEWMAN Mr J) Denemore The Story Of Ragge I understood later that this little girl was on her first here visit from Ireland and what a super little girl she is. When on the move and standing she was a little jumpy but that could be due to either her journey here or the wind at that time. She did, however, hold herself together to present an excellent profile on the move and moved out with such drive. On going over her I found an excellent shape of skull with a well defined stop and dark eyes topped with large mobile ears. Dentition was correct. Tail carried correctly well over her back. So much to like about this young bitch who, I feel, may have a great future ahead of her.
2nd: (KIRK Mrs E) Iotastar’s Forever Autumn At Kirkchase JW Lots to like about this bitch and it was a pity that she met 1 today but I am sure her title will come soon. She presented a correct head shape with mobile ears and, for a red head, the promise of plenty of ear fringing to come. Good depth of chest and spring of rib and with adequate length of loin. She was a joy to watch on the move, placing all feet correctly both moving and standing. Coat of silky texture and with a well carried tail.

1st: (MILLER, Miss K F & RYAN Mr E L) Feorlig Wake Up Maggie JW Pleasing little bitch whose lack of a full blaze does not detract in any way to her exquisite expression and overall presence in the ring. On going over her I found an alert expression from her dark eyes, correct third to two thirds stop to skull, and finely shaped muzzle. Well shaped shoulders and depth of chest with a nicely rounded body over a good spring of rib. She excelled on the move and was true in movement both coming and going. Well turned out and expertly handled.
2nd: (WALSH Ms H V) Jorgealin Moon Star At Purepixie This little girl pushed hard for the no.1 spot today. Similar in type to 1 and moved out well with excellent front and rear gait. Correctly shaped head and ears set at the correct angle leading to a good length of neck and correct shoulder placement. Topline was held on the move and her tail was carried well and curved over her back. An honest little bitch.

Limit Bitch (6 Entries Abs: 0)
1st: (ORCHARD Miss S) Ringland Yoko’s Solo At Panspayon Sh.CM A bitch I have admired for some time with her overall outline, movement and balance and was pleased to award her the 1st place today in this strong class. Head of correct proportions with a fine muzzle, dark eyes and correct bite. Good reach of neck and well placed shoulders giving her a correct front movement. Rear movement was parallel and she moved out well. Well sprung ribs and firm body which I like to see, particularly in a bitch. Tail carried correctly and high over her back.
2nd: (COX Mr B D S & Mrs P A) Tricianbri Tuppence A Kiss JW Different in size to 1, being a smaller and finer bitch, but with a finesse and elegance that epitomises the Papillon. Head with well defined stop and well shaped skull. Darkest of eyes and with a fine muzzle and good dentition. Deep depth of chest and well laid shoulders enabling her to display a correct front movement. Also, well angulated at the rear with a good turn of stifle giving her a correct parallel rear movement. Drove out well when on the move displaying a level topline.

1st: (GREGORY Mrs J K) Ch Skyvana Reddy To Go To Tonkory JW Another smaller bitch with a lot to like about her. Correct head proportions and ratio of one third to two thirds, leading to large, slightly soft, mobile ears, which, if not really alert, can be pulled down by her abundant fringing, but when alert, they display beautiful butterfly wings. Dark eyes, fine muzzle and well rounded rib cage with a good firm body. Moved out well with plenty of drive, carrying a well plumed tail and stood with all feet in the correct position.
2nd: (STEWART, Mrs K & STEWART-KNIGHT Miss K) Ch & Ir Ch Tussalud Story Tales I have liked this little girl over the years for her overall construction, movement and the sweetest of expressions and I was not disappointed today. Her head was in proportion with a well defined stop and fine muzzle. Large mobile ears which she used to her advantage. She moved out well and was responsive to her handler.

1st: (BUSS, Miss E & BUSS Mrs M) Ch Twiggy Cupcake Of Flutura JW A bitch oozing in quality that I have admired for several years. Although not carrying as much coat today, it did not detract in any way to her overall construction and presentation. Everything in its place and when standing her feet were placed where they should be, neither turning in nor out. Head and ears both in proportion to the standard, and her ears were large and mobile. Good firm body and well rounded ribs. A pleasure to go over and a pleasure to watch on the move.
2nd: (WELLS, Rev K J & BROWN Ms A J) Ch Metamorphic Delivered Unlucky to meet 1 today as another quality little bitch, totally different to my class winner but still with a beautifully shaped skull and an abundance of ear fringing, showing the sweetest of expressions. Good reach of neck leading to a level topline, which she held on the move. Tail well feathered and plumed and placed.
