Critique

Thank you to the committee of Boston and District Canine society for the appointment and for stewards, Carly, Colin & Sue for keeping the ring running smoothly. Thank you also to the exhibitors for the entry, many of whom had taken a day off work. It was a pleasure to judge your dogs, unfortunately it is not possible to give every dog the reward it deserves. Many of the younger exhibits were unsettled by the very windy conditions and the related noise made by the marquee.

As a general observation there is increasing variation in the breed, in terms of size, consistency of movement, head proportions and depth of eye colour. However, I was very pleased to award the top awards to the following dogs:

BoB &DCC 726 – Ch/multi Ch Fashion First High Priority (imp) (Mr G & Mrs A Robb & Gudbergsdottir)
RDCC 696 – Keomandi Fly Me to The Moon JW (M Keown)
BoS & BCC 737 – Ch Amicae Bright Spark (Mrs M Whitehill)
RBCC 718 – Ch Johnasta Georgia for Temelora (Mrs S Morrell)
BP 702 – Graycaz Etienne (Mrs C Lee-Slater)
BV 678 – Taliesyn Black Walnut (Mrs G A Geary)
BSB 671 – Struck Gold at Melangel (Mr R Bartlam)

2nd 704 – Graycaz Where I Go Hugo’s (Mrs C Lee-Slater) 6month red sable and white, very green. Pleasing head with good stop and dark eyes. Well placed shoulders and medium length neck. Level topline, maintained when moving forward freely, was unsettled by the windy conditions.

Tri colour, who I have watched from the ringside, beautiful free movement when viewed from the side. Parallel front, good lay of shoulder. Head correctly proportioned good fringing on the ears. Surprised he is still eligible for Graduate.

Post Graduate Dog Entries: 5 Absentees: 1
1st 696 – Keomandi Fly Me to The Moon JW (M Keown) This dainty tri boy caught my eye as he entered the ring. Lovely head with tri markings, well defined stop and dark eyes giving the melting papillon expression I was hoping to find. Ears well fringed and well placed. Correct neck leading to well laid shoulders and level topline. A joy to watch on the move, excellent drive from well-turned stifles. Fine silky coat in immaculate condition. RDCC could easily change places with CC winner, I will enjoy watching his career progress.
2nd 711 – Finity Run The Gauntlet JW (Miss K Mason) Another tri colour youngster, just 24 months old. Moves well being parallel in front and driving from behind, from good angulation, giving good ground coverage. Level topline from well laid shoulders. Well proportioned head, dark eyes with good stop. Fringing coming. Sadly another who struggled with his tail in the wind today.
3RD 719 – Tarnock Tap Dance Teddy (Mrs A A Morris)
RES 680 – Taliesyn Douglas Fir (Mrs G A Geary)

1st 726 – Ch/multi Ch Fashion First High Priority (imp) (Mr G & Mrs A Robb & Gudbergsdottir) Beautifully presented with flowing silky coat. This dainty 3 years old excels in proportions in both head and body. Ears large, mobile and well fringed. Skull slightly rounded with good stop and dark eyes. Well set medium neck into well placed shoulders. Correct neck leading to well laid shoulders and level topline. From the side you see the excellent drive from well-turned stifles, parallel front, and well plumed tail giving the typical papillon outline I was hoping to find. I was pleased to award him the DCC and later BOB. Lovely to see him go on to take Group 2.
2nd 738 – Amicae Top of The Class (Mrs M Whitehill) Red sable and white of 21m. Pleasing head and expression. Good neck with well laid shoulder, level topline held on the move. A lovely class of youngsters, a promising future for the breed.
1st 703 – Graycaz Dutch Courage (Mrs C Lee-Slater) Adorable 6m old red and white, with everything in the right place. Lovely head with correct skull and dark eyes. Ears rounded and mobile, good length of neck into well developed body. Moved very well because of correct construction a little unsettled by the wind in the challenge, one to watch for the future.
2nd 671 – Struck Gold at Melangel (Mr R Bartlam) In many ways this 7m old puppy is very similar to 1. Just needs more time to settle on the move.
3RD 714 – Farthinghall Misty Morn (Mrs K Milroy)
RES 707 – Dreams Come True at Melangel (Mrs M, Miss B & Miss J Mann)
VHC 694 – Summerjades Snow Queen (Miss M J Holmes)

Puppy Bitch Entries: 5 Absentees: 1
1st 701 – Lafford Ninja (Mrs C P Lees) Tri colour with striking markings, very well fringed for one so young. Scored on over all outline and proportions. Well proportioned head with good stop well rounded between expressive ears. Good neck and lay of shoulder. Well set tail which continually wagged. Moved freely, would like to see her tighten up a little at the front. BPB.
2nd 735 – Keomandi Lady of The Lake (Ms H V Walsh) Another lovely puppy who could easily change places with 1. Red sable and white with lovely head proportions, good stop and well set neck. Level topline maintained on the move, good spring of rib. Moved freely, would like to see her tighten up a little at the front. I was nitpicking between 1 & 2 and this one doesn’t quite have the finish of 1 yet.
3RD 677 – Brandonburg Darkest Bloom at Taliesyn (Mrs G A Geary)
RES 709 – Finity Quintessential (Miss H Marsden)

Junior Bitch Entries: 5 Absentees: 2
All 3 dogs could change places on another day. There was a lot to like about all of them.
1st 669 – Ablazzor Ebony and Ivory at Jhanakia (Mrs S & Mrs J Austin & Thompson) This b/w won the class on her exuberance and showmanship. She moved freely round the ring, maintaining the typical papillon outline. Good head and pleasing expression. Well fringed mobile ears. Level topline maintained on the move.
2nd 723 – Tarnock Pop The Bubbles (Ms D Olof) 15m dark shaded sable with a gorgeous head, set off with well fringed well placed ears and well defined stop. Moved confidently and freely around the ring, however this youngster was also bothered by the windy conditions.
3rd 686 – Manawyddan Sweeter Music (Dr M L & Dr E A Griffiths)

Yearling Bitch Entries: 2 Absentees: 0
These two were unlucky to be the only two in this class as it highlighted the range of size and styles in the breed. Neither is incorrect in size so it came down to breed type & movement.
1st 685 – Manawyddan Springtime (Dr M L & Dr E A Griffiths) Rangy black and white of 15m. Head well proportioned with rounded skull between large mobile well placed ears, well fringed for age. Eyes dark and well set. Good length of neck leading to level topline and arched tail. Moved confidently round the ring, parallel coming and going. Would have liked a little more drive from the rear. A promising youngster.
2nd 721 – Ookiimimi Serenity (Mrs J Nash) Very small red and white of 20m. Fine and dainty with pretty well proportioned head. Well set neck and shoulders, well carried tail beginning to plume. Rather unsettled on the move.

Novice Bitch Entries: 2 Absentees: 0
1st 700 – Lastayla Hocus Pocus (Miss M & Mrs S Last) Red and white 8m’s old with solid head of good proportions. Correct mouth and well placed eyes. Medium neck into firm shoulders. Well sprung ribs. Moved confidently.
2nd 693 – Laura Margenis at Summerjade NAF (Miss M J Holmes) Red sable and white who needs a little more confidence to do herself justice. Lovely well-proportioned head with endearing expression, helped by the darkest of eyes.

Graduate Bitch Entries: 3 Absentees: 1
1st 720 – Ookiimimi Quicksilver (Mrs J Nash) B/w of 2.5 years, going over her on the table you could see she was a gentle soul. Beautiful eyes, well set in the skull which was gently rounded between the large mobile ears. Good neck leading to level top line. Moved with drive from the rear.
2nd 689 – Yeldaeh’s Mrs Pepperpot (Mr T R & Mrs C Headley) Very pretty red sable and white of 2 years old. Well laid shoulder, moderate length of neck. Moved well fore and aft. Head of correct proportions with good dentition and dark eyes. Not showing to her advantage today.

Post Graduate Bitch Entries: 3 Absentees: 1
1st 732 – Khanor Another Kate (Mr C & Mrs A Thornton) Dainty red sable of 2 years with well proportioned head and liquid dark eyes. Her head is rounded between her well fringed ears and complimented by a well defined stop. Head and body in proportion giving pleasing outline. Moved with drive from good angulation

1st 698 – Lynflyer Rainbow Dancer at Kirkchase JW (Mrs E Kirk) This tri colour caught my eye as she entered the ring. Beautifully proportioned and didn’t disappoint on the table – well proportioned head with adequate fringing on her expressive ears. Moderate neck leading to well developed shoulders and level topline. Moved with drive from a good turn of stifle. Parallel fore and aft. Was considered for top honours today and I will enjoy watching her career.
2nd 717 – Aurora vom Schwabenhof for Temelora (Imp Deu) (Mrs S Morrell) Phalene of 2 ½ years. In beautiful single silky coat, well fringed correctly placed ears. Well laid shoulder carrying a good neck. Well set tail arched over her back. Moved confidently around the ring.

RES 721 – Ookiimimi Serenity (Mrs J Nash)

Open Bitch Entries: 5 Absentees: 1 Very competitive class.
1st 737 – Amicae Bright Spark (Mrs M Whitehill) This red sable and white girl commanded the ring and was at one with her handler. Correct shape for the breed, with good head including well defined stop, rounded skull holding expressive ears at 45 degrees. Dark eyes with alluring expression. She was good to go over on the table with a good spring of rib, lovely lay of shoulder, supporting and elegant neck into level topline which she held on the move. The movement was free and easy with plenty of drive from well angulated hind legs. Correctly plumed tail. A pleasure to award her the CC.
2nd 718 – Johnasta Georgia for Temelora (Mrs S Morrell) Tri girl who moved freely round the ring with great drive from correct angulation at the rear. Again, a well proportioned head with well fringed and correctly set ears, leading to elegant neck, good shoulders and level topline. Overall, a very balanced dog. RBCC.
