Critique

My thanks to the committee of WKC for the kind invitation to judge Papillons at their 2022 Ch show, their first since the recent pandemic. The new layout seemed absolutely superb. Originally, the appointment was to be that of the late Mr Jan Roosens; and he was very much to the forefront of my mind on the day. Overall, I was very pleased with my main winners – some very nice new youngsters coming through, which bodes well for the future. I was slightly perturbed by front construction in general, too many are high stepping which hinders any chance of ‘free flowing’ action. Mouths were excellent but some teeth could have been cleaner, and presentation in some areas could have been improved. Thank you to my stewards Kirsty and Lyndia, who kept the ring running smoothly all day.

Class 1821 VD (4 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: THOMPSON, Lady Jane & AUSTIN, Mrs S MELANGEL HIGHLAND VOGUE AT JHANAKIA, very smart chap, looking good for his age, good facial properties and large ears, much to admire, well bodied throughout, good tail set with some lift, goes well on the move, but a touch more front reach would enhance his outline. Best coat in the class. BVIB.

2nd: FOYNES, Mr Aidan John Lafay Petite Etoile JW, also a very nice one with much to admire, not quite the expression of the winner, but he does have a good head type & large enough ears. Good to go over, finely boned throughout, well plumed tail & he too moves with accuracy, not the coat texture of the winner.

3rd: WALKLETT, MRS JUDITH Farthinghall’s New Touch At Angullyon

Class 1822 MPD (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: OLOF, Ms DEE TARNOCK SWEEP THE BOARD, most promising puppy with lots to like, even at this tender age, lovely expression, large ears with good fringing coming, firm body & well-set tail – one of the best of the day. Wouldn’t want him any heavier & do hope he refines down a little, but at the present time shows lots of promise and is an easy, free mover & his coat is just as you would want.

2nd: MANN, Mrs M & MEACHAM, A Khanor the Musical Guy TAF, heavier made than the winner & not quite as good in expression, although he does have good balance to his skull and muzzle. His ears are a touch smaller than the winners. Good body, perhaps a tad long for perfect balance, even at this age. Well set tail which he could carry slightly better but I think this is a case of him needing to gain confidence, which I am sure he will do. Went well in all directions when he got going.

3rd: FOYNES, Mr Aidan John Lilacrose Final Touch for Lafay

Class 1823 PD (4 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: WHITEHILL, Mrs M AMICAE Mr CHIPS, very nice young dog with a lot to like, good head and nice dark eye, large ears & good fringing coming. Excellent topline and tail, finely boned throughout and he has such lovely hare feet. I would have preferred slightly more reach on move, but he is very sound & goes with an easy, dainty action. If he continues to mature on in this vein, he will be an exciting prospect. BPD.

2nd: OLOF, Ms DEE TARNOCK TAP DANCE TEDDY, smaller than the winner & not quite the maturity in head as yet, but he has a good expression and large enough ears. A touch upright in shoulder, but he too has a good topline and a lovely tailset. Moderate rear angulation, he moved with good rear action, but can settle in front to advantage. Well presented and handled.

3rd: ANDERSON ,ANDERSON,KIERNAN, Mrs ,Miss,Mr. Northlyte Caledonia

Class 1824 JD (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: CHALLENGER, Mrs Angela Skyvana Devil in Disguise with Lyveden, loved this young dog as soon as he came into the ring, beautiful attitude & such a dainty, inquisitive chap. Excellent head and eye, beautiful ears & super fringing, alert and very mobile. Finely boned and beautifully made throughout, his well plumed tail perhaps could have more lift; but this is being ultra-critical, it was on the move where he impressed me the most, his footfall was as close as I could find to what I was looking for. Excellent coat of correct silky texture, I was very pleased to award him his first CC.

2nd: 3887 ANDERSON ,ANDERSON,KIERNAN, Mrs ,Miss,Mr. Northlyte ring of Brodgar, lovely young dog, liked his expression a lot, ears not quite so big as the winners, good to go over, firm topline and good tailset, well plumed tail and good hare feet, he moved with a good, free and easy action, if a shade unsettled in front and just not quite the easy stride in profile as the winner. A good prospect for the future.

3rd: THOMPSON, Lady Jane & AUSTIN, Mrs S SKYVANA CATCH ME AT JHANAKIA

Class 1825 ND (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: QUINN, Mrs R Magic Sunrise Imperator Son (IMP LV), a very smart little chap, good head and eye, would prefer slightly larger ears, but they were beautifully fringed. Lovely forehand, good body, could have a slightly better topline and his tail was carried slightly tighter than ideal, good rear angulation and in excellent muscle. Sound and accurate on the move, and very well presented and handled.

Class 1826 PGD (4 Entries) Abs: 2, lots to like about these two.

1st: STANBURY, Mrs S Inixia Made By Design, loved the dainty, elegant outline of this young dog, everything I was looking for on the day, excellent head and eye, super ears with lovely fringing, excellent front, firm, level topline and his tail set and carriage are excellent. Finely boned throughout and he stands on good hare feet. Comes to life on the move with his excellent carriage & holds his outline at all times. RDCC.

2nd: LANGDON, Ms Sophie Skyvana Daredevil, another very nice one and I admired his type very much, super shape and size, lovely ears and expression, good to go over and he is maturing beautifully, not quite the front of the winner but shows a lot of promise & with the added benefit of time and experience, should have many good days.

Class 1827 LD (7 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 3892 DAVIDSON, Mrs Elaine & DAVIDSON, Mr Martin G Elmaraine Chasing Rainbows, exciting young dog with a beautiful head and eye, lovely ears which really frame his fance and enhance his expression. He is good to go over and typical throughout, enough neck & firm topline, goes so well on the move, I would have preferred him more settled in front action, and this told against him in the challenge. He was in the shortlist for the DCC & I am sure is destined for the upper house.

2nd: BORG, Mrs & Ms A.C. & E.G.N. Elendil Crusader, gave the winner a real run for his money & he too is a beautifully conditioned and well-made dog. Good head and eye, though a touch stronger in head than the winner I thought, he is well muscled throughout and is a free, and easy mover. Close decision and another who I am sure is destined for bigger things.

3rd: WELLS, The Rev’d Kirsty & BROWN, Ms Amanda Skyvana Caught at Metamorphic

Class 1828 OD (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: THOMPSON, Lady Jane & AUSTIN, Mrs S MELANGEL HIGHLAND BY DESIGN AT JHANAKIA, a very honest sort of dog & did not catch my eye initially on entering the ring, but to go over he is very pleasing and this is where he won. I liked his head and eye, but I would prefer bigger ears for ideal. Well bodied and soundly made, his tail is well set & carried and he is very accurate when moving. I would prefer less ticking through his coat but it is cosmetic. Very well presented.

2nd: FOYNES, Mr Aidan John Martika Kiss And Tell For Lafay, in a similar way to the winner, this dog is not an instant eye catcher, but he too is well made and good to go over. His head and eye are appealing & he has lovely ears, which could carry more fringing. A shade more upright in front than the winner which was apparent when he moved, but his proportions are good & his action, particularly in profile, put him ahead of 3 who is another very nice dog.

3rd: MORRELL, Mrs Sue Tricianbri Harry Beau For Temelora

Class 1829 VB (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: ORCHARD, Miss Susie Ringland Yoko’s Solo At Panspayon Sh.CM ShCEx V, I have always admired this bitch for her type & quality and do consider her very unlucky not to have gained that elusive 3rd CC. There is very little I would change about her, just now with age starting to thicken all through, as is to be expected, therefore not quite as ‘scopey’ as I would have liked. She is a beautiful bitch & a pleasure to judge.

2nd: DIPROSE, Mrs Karen Lilacrose Chasing Options, another very nice bitch & with much to commend her, not quite the expression of the winner but she is still very pretty, nice ears & good body, accurate and sound on the move with much to admire. Very well presented and handled.

Class 1830 MPB (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: WALKLETT, MRS JUDITH ANGULLYON ENIGMA’S SECRET NAF, hope she has done most of her growing, her head is pretty but does still need a little time to fill out. She came to life on the move and won this class on her scope & maturity of body. She is well balanced and moves with such freedom & with that light, dainty unrestricted action. Shows a lot of promise.

2nd: WHITEHILL, Mrs M Lilacrose Tri This Talent, another lovely bitch with such an endearing attitude. She is more developed in head than the winner and perhaps a touch prettier at the moment, I just felt on the move she wasn’t quite so free and easy as the winner, but I do think she too shows lots of promise & has time on her side.

3rd: FOYNES, Mr Aidan John Lilacrose Magic Crystal for Lafay

Class 1831 PB (5 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 3927 ROBB, Mrs Irene & ROBB, Mr Glenn Gleniren Daddy’s Starmaker, lovely young bitch at the top end of puppy, very pretty expression & good ears, with fringing just starting to come. Well bodied and good to go over, firm topline & good tailset and carriage, with an excellent plume. On the move she is light and elegant, but she can still firm up to advantage. Beautifully conditioned and presented.

2nd: 3919 MORRELL, Mrs Sue Aurora vom Schwabenhof for Temelora naf (Imp Deu), gave the winner a run for her money as she is a very typey young Phalene bitch, similar in many respects, her head still needs a little time & her tail wasn’t quite so good, but her rear action was slightly better than the winners. She too is in beautiful nick & shows lots of promise for the future.

3rd: 3945 WHITEHILL, Mrs M AMICAE BELLE OF THE BALL

Class 1832 JB (6 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: MORRELL, Mrs Sue Athene vom Schwabenhof for Temelora naf (Imp Deu), caught my eye immediately for her type & quality. Beautiful Phalene bitch with such a super head for her age, her ears are set just as they should be and her facial features come together to give a gorgeous expression. To go over she is well made, good front, firm topline, excellent tail and carriage, well-muscled throughout and in super condition. On the move she was free and easy and her accuracy both up and back and in profile were a rarity on the day. In the challenge I had three in my mind, but she stepped it up a gear & I could not deny her the BCC & over a lovely young dog, BOB – gave a good account of herself in the big ring & she should have many more good days.

2nd: LANGDON, Ms Sophie Skyvana Drama Queen, a lovely bitch with a beautiful head and eye, good ears & they are well fringed. She is well made throughout and is beautifully conditioned. Finely boned & she stands on good legs and feet. Ideally, I would prefer to see her with less ticking through her coat, but it is cosmetic and she won this place on her elegance and free moving action. Perfectly presented and handled.

3rd: GRIFFITHS, Dr & Dr M L & E A Manawyddan To A Wild Rose

Class 1833 NB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 3928 SELLICK, Miss K A Inixia Annabelle, very typey bitch with the prettiest of heads, perhaps could have slightly larger ears. Well-made throughout and beautifully bodied, she is most typical of her breeding. Goes with a good, dainty action and as with all exhibits from this kennel, uses herself very well.

Class 1834 PGB (4 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: GREGORY, Mrs Judith Kathryn Tonkory Blossom, lovely bitch who still has some maturing to do, but she won her place here on her free moving action & scope throughout. Good head and eye, fringing still to come, well bodied, beautiful tailset to enhance her outline on the move. With the benefit of added maturity, she should do well.

2nd: DIPROSE, Mrs Karen Lilacrose Touch of Talent, different to the winner & did give me much food for thought, as she is ultra pretty & really well bodied with the benefit of being in good coat. I felt she lacked the scope of the winner & her tail is a touch too tight, but she is a quality young bitch.

3rd: WALKLETT, MRS JUDITH & MILROY, MRS KATRIONA FARTHINGHALL’S ENIGMA FOR ANGULLYON NAF

Class 1835 LB (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: WELLS, The Rev’d Kirsty & BROWN, Ms Amanda Metamorphic Vista JW, so much to like about this lovely bitch, pretty head and eye, good ears though prefer slightly more fringing to enhance, well bodied and beautifully conditioned, lovely tail in terms of set, plume and carriage, so accurate on the move and so light and free flowing, touch lower to ground than the BCC winner, but a beautiful bitch & should gain her title. RBCC.

2nd: MATTHEWS, Mrs A J Berestead Haute Couture, such a pretty bitch just not quite the softness of expression of the winner, but her muzzle is perhaps more finely pointed, however. Good to go over, but not the front of the winner. Her tail set is excellent and this enhances her outline on the move. Carries herself well on the move & is so dainty she will always appeal. Presented in perfect condition.

Class 1836 OB (8 Entries) Abs: 1 A good class.

1st: CARROLL & NEWMAN, Mr S & J Ir Ch Denemore The Story of Ragge, I loved this bitch as soon as she came in the ring, excellent head and eye, super ears, being all of a piece and so well made. As she is fine and dainty, on the move she is effortless and elegant & it was my biggest disappointment of the day that she did not play ball, so as to cost her any chance of a higher award. Excellent coat of the correct texture, perfectly presented.

2nd: LEE-SLATER, Mrs C & KEWLEY, Mrs Christine Magic Sunrise Natalia (IMP LVA), close up to the winner & could easily change places, so much to like in terms of head quality and scope throughout, all of a piece and beautifully made; firm topline, good tail carriage and moves with a really light, free flowing action. Out of coat on the day, so once she returns in full bloom should go on to better things & is most worthy of her title.

3rd: GREGORY, Mrs Judith Kathryn Tonkory For My Sins

Evan L Ryan
